I like E.A. Poe's poem:
Eldorado
-Edgar Allan Poe
Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.
But he grew old-
This knight so bold-
And o'er his heart a shadow
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.
And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow-
"Shadow," said he,
"Where can it be-
This land of Eldorado?"
"Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,"
The shade replied-
"If you seek for Eldorado!"
Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

I never judge these people who take such great risks with their life. Our moments on earth are so fleeting to begin with. In the grand scheme of things, our existence is absolutely meaningless. However, due to the way we have evolved, our sanity depends on us creating meaning for our lives. People do that in many different ways. Some believe in God, others follow their passions with such intensity that it kills them. Death is only sad for those left behind.
