The only way to go there legally is to go as a guest of a tribal member. I have been considering trying to find a member who is willing to act as guide/chaperone for a hike in. One way would be to camp in that general area for several days, to the south, not on the reservation, then drive in to Taholah and ask around for anyone with some spare time and needing a little cash.

The reservation is open to the public. You can drive up there and look out over the bluff at the area if you wanted to kill some time. I doubt the road has had much maintenance so make sure you have a car that you don't mind getting scrubbed by brush and bottoming out in potholes.

There's a "backdoor" approach for Tunnel Is. that, to my knowledge, doesn't entail trespassing on reservation land. I can't claim to recall every turn from the highway, but a friend's parents own some land out there and from the end of the road their property abuts, one can easily walk down to the bank of Whale Creek and head south.

Probably don't want to give out this type of info on the internet except through PM, what could you possibly hope to gain by suggesting people trespass on private land?
The road from Taholah up to where it ends is public and there is some tribal land abutting the bluff if one simply wants to sip a beer and take a peak at the beach but you can't access the beach without trespassing on private land.

Cool trip report! Access is an issue, and I respect the tribes decision.

I was just thinking about another visit since I was only there once almost 10 years ago.

Wow...nature at her best...Her sculptures on the coast such testament to nothing is permanent. Your trip reminds me of going out to Shi Shi beach in January 1991 i think and when got down to the beach finding the arch at the North end had collapsed. It was a wide arch if anyone remembers it. I was taken aback as I had often stood inside it to take a break from rain slapping me in the face or photographing the ocean. I spent a lot of time out there in the late 70's and through the 80's. Till the park service burnt all the huts down...ah...the week long vacations in the southern most hut...those were the days! A playground of play grounds for sure. The streams change, log jams change, arches collapse and what was is no more.
Anyone else been watching wedding rock. I really think it will b a seastack in a not so distant future. It's happening now.
Cheers and carry on
