Yellowstone or even the New Madrid There is no place to run. So just sit down and enjoy a beer and a ham sammich.

Carry on, my wayward son.

Hmmm, I think this report would have been more convincing had the reporter been slightly more knowledgable in his facts. I saw several inaccuracies in his choice of wording. However, this doesn't change the underlying fact of the presence of (and movement of the plates in) the subduction zone. Now this just causes me to wonder: is the plate movement rate constant? Can it be measured? If the next quake is "late", could it be because the plate movement rate has slowed? I wonder how that could be determined? Several years ago I took the grandkids to Mt ST Helens and along the way stopped at one of the visitor centers and recall one of the rangers telling that the plate movement was proximately the same as fingernail growth. How can they tell? So much I don't know....

I got it figgered out. Evacuate everybody. Send a fracking crew out to sea and start fracking in that crack until it sets off the quake. That way we get it over with. clown.gif

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

Between Orting, Puyallup, and Fife are many sirens and evacuation signs not just for the possibility of volcanic activity and a lahar from Mt. Rainier, but because a big earthquake could make an unstable flank of the mountain slip. The mountain would look different and the towns would be gone, including the Port of Tacoma which is one of Americas largest. So, I hope that there will not be a large quake.

Just visiting Ocean Shores is a gamble. If it hits in the summer, thousands of people will be trying to evacuate by car down a narrow, two-lane road in less than 30 minutes. Guaranteed fail. May as well head the other direction and grab a good seat on the jetty to watch the waves come in.
There is a discipline called risk management which is mainly probability studies. The probability of the Big One's hitting while you're at the beach for a weekend or a week are extremely small, probably the same as getting struck by lightning while there. Of course, if you live there full time, your chances of getting caught there by the Big One go way, way up. I've been reading and thinking about subduction zone quakes ever since Oregon Public Broadcasting released their first Oregon Field Guide program about the findings of the dead cedar forest in the late 1980s. The knowledge hasn't stopped me from going to Westport, although it certainly discourages me from any consideration of living there.

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.--E.Abbey

Didn't mean to imply that anyone should not visit the Washington coast based upon tsunami fears. The odds of "the big one" occurring on any given weekend are indeed rather slim - slim enough that I have been to Ocean Shores several times for winter weekends of clamming, birding and agate hunting. But, for the duration, I am viscerally aware of the bottleneck at the top of the cul-de-sac that I and thousands of other people are on the wrong side of. My point, in the previous post, was to draw a link between the uproar in the 21-page thread about Darwin-proofing the ice caves and the ever-present risk that we all live with in earthquake country. And that driving into Ocean Shores is not unlike walking into the ice caves. In both cases, a risk management calculation has been made between desiring a certain experience and exposing oneself to the risk involved.
