Does anyone know the status of huckleberries in the mountains this year? Early? Won't be ripe for some time yet? Thought about heading to Rainier for berries, but want to get a report before going up.
Thank you for your help.

I suggest going over to wta.org and checking recent trip reports for the areas you're interested in. I've heard that in general, most areas are WAY ahead of normal for this time of year.

Saw a few on the lower 3 Fingers trail, same, small and tart. But the Salmon Berries were frickin' huge!...and near peak ripeness. Although I ate most of them attempting to survive.

Himalaya Blackberries are getting ripe in Issaquah now, earliest I have ever seen black sweet ones.

Randyhiker, we were at Twin Lake on Wednesday! DD ate plenty of berries, but compared to my store-bought blueberries, they were indeed sour. I'd imagine anywhere in that vicinity would have plenty to pick.

Over here in the Inland NW the berries are in full swing, if not a little past prime.
Huckleberries and blueberries are WAY ahead of normal and will be wilting on the bush in a couple weeks. Some patches where there is less below surface water they are done...raisins. Fallen off the bush.
Other spots with more moisture they are just past prime and on the way out.
A very few place I have been to at higher elevations still have a few green berries...but that is rare now.

The poor bears. Used to going for them at a certain time of the year and now it's been moved up!

I just got a boat load at Mt. Spokane. Some are past their prime, but most are still in their prime or getting there quickly.
I hope the bears have a good berry substitute for late summer.

Commonwealth Basin is loaded with blueberries, salmonberries, and some huckleberries right now. The PCT around Alaska Mountain is prime for that lower-to-the-ground variety of blueberries.
