I prefer ankle length or mid-calf for warm weather hiking (i.e. not skiing). Why? because I also use "scree gaiters" and hike with shorts. I hate getting sand, dirt, and pebbles in my shoes and having a sock that protrudes above the top of the scree gaiter gives it a good seal on my leg. it also prevents chafing on my lower leg from the gaiters moving about. For winter it is mid-calf, or over the calf, as my winter stuff is nearly 100% in ski boots or mountaineering boots.

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

It's all about them no show socks!
Personally, I've found wearing two socks works best for blister prevention, a light and medium duty. I use the SmartWool PhD as thin liner sock and throw a Darn Tough or SmartWool medium duty sock on top of that. Full length for the outer sock, roll them down to top of boot if get hot. You want your sock to at least go above the boot top.

Same here - can't stand getting stuff in my boots, so I use short gaiters to prevent that from happening. Just got a pair of "Dirty Girl" gaiters for my trail runners so I can keep stuff out of them too.

The only easy day was yesterday...

As a friend of mine found out, be careful if you google dirty girl to order these. Gaiters probably won't be the first hit you come up with...

My buddy should've known better, but it made for a good story at least.

I really like my wrightsocks. double layer to prevent blister. I use the ones with the synthetic inner and wool outer. http://wrightsock.myshopify.com/products/merino-stride

Google search, with Safe Search turned off, give the gaiters' site as the 6th result. One of the other 5 is for a mud run, and the rest are for the "coming of age/comedy" theatrical movie named "Dirty Girl". Images and Videos also do not return anything prurient, at least in the first couple pages.

I'm so stoked on these hiking socks http://www.cloudlineapparel.com/products/switchback-merino-wool-hiking-socks they only come in regular height, but I assume since the company is new they will release some more styles eventually. Love the colors and the design, they remind me of some old REI brand socks I had as a Scout.

I shared that view until I discovered Darn Tough sox per iron's recommendation.

inflight seems to think they are the wierd one in the bunch, I think I have that beat. Specialty brand socks? In summer I wear military jungle spike proof boots with heavy lugs soles. Not for spikes but the lugs give me a very good grip on rock and when walking across logs. The lugs are also open enough to not clog up with material. In the winter I change to whatever brand of boot fits well and has a decent sole but not so much the deep lugs. I always wear two pair of socks. In the summer I wear a synthetic next to my foot and a cotton pair over that. The synthetic allows some slippage and the cotton tends to wick the sweat away. In winter I still use the synthetic next to my foot but have a heavy pair of wool over that. Blisters? When breaking in a new pair of boots I coat the most prone areas to blisters with tincture of benzoit sometimes referred to as artificial skin.
