Gwen joined me for a scramble up Mt. Pugh on Sunday. 5300' of gain is a good work out. We headed out early and reached the trailhead by 8:30 am. That included sawing out a tree down on the spur to the trail. You could drive around and over it but now it is gone. Well, Gwen did the sawing. I tossed the tree.
Now You See It Now You Don't
The first 3.5 miles goes fast. The grade is very smooth and steady through the forest. The talus field not so much. It was overcast and very cloudy/foggy going up the talus. At Stujack Pass we were above most of the clouds. As the day went on the clouds grew and the smoke did too. Not the best of views. I had great views on my first visit in 2003. Not as good this day.
Mossy Forest Stujack Pass In Clouds
We climbed to the ridge and then followed it to the saddle above the glacier. Not a lot of it left. Next is the blasted out section where hands are needed. The upper mountain is my favorite part. Lots of grass, heather, and granite.

After a full mile of vertical gain we reached the summit. No Glacier Peak. Just a thin outline of Sloan. Three Fingers earlier but not any more. Still worth the effort. The trip down was faster and easy after reaching the forest and smooth trail. We saw maybe a dozen groups the whole day. Never very crowded. Much too good a trip to let 12 years go by between visits. Surprisingly, the first time I've been over 7000' this year.

Great pictures! I never let a year go by without going up Pugh. Looks like that's where I'll be headed in the next few days.
Thank you so much for clearing the tree :-)

Thanks for clearing the blow down. I always keep a saw in the car too (mostly so I won't get trapped!).

Gwen, I think you are pretty hard core! I have become much more wary of these kind of trails in my old age, not sure I could have done it.

Not sure I would have gone if I had seen this photo first. It looks a lot more exposed than it felt.

Aw, thanks KC. It's really not as bad as it looks. I'll admit to being slightly intimidated on the way up, so I just kept my blinders on and focused on the path before me. Truth be told, the places that have exposure have good footing and the places with less than ideal footing don't really have much exposure. Anyway, I was pleased to tick this one off on my list and look forward to returning for the views some day.

It took me for flippin' ever to do Pugh. It was ridiculous and embarrassing.
Last time I was up there, I hung out at Lake Metan poking around for what might be the original trail I saw on an old map. Looks like there were 2, one from Barlow Pass and one from the Darrington side, and they both met up at Lake Metan.
Found a path that went a short ways toward Barlow, but it disappeared.
Yeah, go back on a clear day for views.
