I'm jealous of other forums that are keeping up with the times. Using NWH is like time traveling back to 1998.
I'm not much of a computer coder but this looks promising (and free):

Thanks for the suggestion. That does look promising. Unfortunately still in beta and seems a long way from production but will keep it in mind.

Hmmm, I like NWH as is. It's fast, responsive, easy to use, it works as-is on a mobile platform and is not loaded up with junk ads like cascadeclimbers.com.
My opinion is don't fix what's not broken.
That's what I think anyway...

if it ain't broke, nothin' good can come of getting drunk and trying to fix it.

Seems to work fine for me, even easy to use and access on my dinosaur of a cell phone.

It has a certain steampunk ambiance to it

Another vote here for leaving as is.
(But I admit I am an old fart. The first thing I did with Windows 7 was figure out how to make it look like Windows 95.)

Please don't change simply because it's out of "style". Facebook doesn't hold a candle to this site in terms of usability. Posts can be linked, referenced, searched, etc. Some of the customizations Tom has added like photo annotations are super useful and rarely found in any other forum software.
And, most importantly, it keeps working with what I'm guessing is minimal software maintenance effort, something that would not be true with anything new.

It does look dated, but so do I. What really needs to be fixed is the ability to directly upload photos. I realize that is a different platform with capacity issues, but I believe it's the main reason people are posting elsewhere instead of here. Flickr doesn't even have a mobile uploader. Redonk!

We will definitely be upgrading in the future. Just a matter of when. Possibly early next year. In the meantime I hope to improve the mobile interface but don't really see any other glaring needs. I've really been impressed by the forum software the OP linked to and giving it serious consideration for our upgrade path. It's very well thought out and I can see it working well with our setup. When we do upgrade most of the custom features that we've added will remain.

I don't mind how NWHikers shows up on my laptop and mobile cellular telephone. If Tom decided to change the forum format, I would stand behind him.
(Although, if any of the new changes suck, then I would provide the tar and feathers!)
