With a fishing license, is hand fishing legal in Washington, or only "angling" with a hook and line?

Good question. I couldn't find anything in the rule specifically saying no. To play it safe I sent them your question. It is Saturday so they may not be in office. Of course there are a lot of fisher folks here and someone may know.

Angling gear—Lawful and unlawful acts. WAC 220-56-115(2) It is unlawful for any person to take, fish for, or possess fish taken for personal use by any means other than angling with a line attached to a pole held in hand while landing the fish or with a hand-operated line without rod or reel,

Well I guess that sums it up. Thanks!

A hand spool thingy is how I used to fish as a little boy off of the government dock in BC. That was back in my famous rock cod fishing days. The grown-ups would fish from boats for 50lb. salmon. A hand spool thingy worked fine for me.

Hand spools are great, especially for dock fishing. My favorite way to catch fish is with my bare hands, like in creeks. Too bad it's not legal.

The WAC says we have to land the fish with a hook and line. Perhaps if you hooked the fish after you caught it but before removing it from the creek .... ?

FWIW Recreational fishers may use dip nets for smelt and herring. Grabbing fish by hand seems like a futile effort, unless you've dynamited the river pool / lake , a not uncommon fishing method in other parts of the world. :-\

Hey, the only reason Id be doing that is because I was HUNGRY! Screw them in that instance!!! Im hand fishing. I caught a large rainbow with my hands up at Upper Granite Mountain lake once.

I cannot read WDFW's mind, but one possibility is that hand fishing can be stressful to the fish and other fauna.

I wonder if WA made it legal you'd end up with rock weirs, people in groups herding fish into shallows, and whatever people could come up with. For decades I carried about a dozen feet of line with about a size ten hook in my wallet. Find a stick, and you're ready to go after that one fish you see. If you've ever tried to catch one by hand, even one just sitting perfectly under convenient set of downfall over a stream it is much harder and slower. Expect 45 minutes to an hour of slow moving, and one really cold arm from it being in the water for a dozen minutes. And that's if you succeed in not excessively spooking the fish. Carry hook and line. Much easier, faster.

Keep Calm and Carry On? Heck No. Stay Excited and Get Outside!

Whoa...I did not know Trout Tickling could be illegal. I suppose it could be interpreted as "harassment". Good thing I know now because I personally know someone who has done this, but not in Washington wink.gif .

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.
