i have a chunk of doug fir leftover from a project. i'm thinking i would take this chunk (6x12) and make it into an artsy mountain type thing to sit atop our fireplace mantel. has anyone seen any cool ideas out there? maybe in a ski resort or cabin or in one of those high caliber woodworking stores? something like this, but better/different???

Iron....I have seem a similar wood design like the one you illustrate here. However, the one I saw had a variety of different woods, each getting darker as they got closer to you. It was very cool. I suppose one could do the same with various shades of stain. Nice idea! cool.gif

I saw a necklace at the Mazama store once and thought about getting it for my girlfriend, but didn't. That was maybe a year ago and I still kind of regret it. It was a rectangle with the word Pasayten and the outline of a bare snag and a crescent moon. It resonated perfectly with our memory of every trip we've ever taken there. Wouldn't have thought of it as a mountain design except that it reminded us of being in the mountains. If I had the skill, I'd probably make a little Shuksan. I've seen a patch at the WIC in Marblemount that looks slightly like your design but in color, with Diablo or Ross Lake in the foreground. It's simple and stylized but looks good.

Probably the wrong shape but it's really simple (so maybe easy to do) and I've always liked it. You could do something like that but make it wider?

i have a bandsaw (3.5" thickness capacity), planer, jointer, drill (not press), table saw (crappy), and basic carpenter tools. skill is moderate to high. i'd prefer not to carve or anything like that since that is more artsy than i would like to commit to. ETA: oh, a router, biscuit jointer, etc...

You own all that? I should make more friends like you to save on woodshop fees. Clearly, you can easily make whatever people suggested here!

many moons ago, i worked construction while in high school and college (summers). i acquired most of it then and brought it out with me to seattle when i moved here. i would much rather be a woodworker than an engineer.
