Does anyone know the name of the wild cherry tree that grows so profusely in western Washington? The one with the small, dark when ripe, and somewhat bitter (sometimes sweet) berries? I have some that I need to cut down, but want to know more about them, but Google comes up with essentially nothing useful. Just the bitter (or choke) cherry which these ones are not.

A friend on Vashon Island sold a huge wild cherry tree to a furniture or instrument maker. I found a fun picture for you. smile.gif

Try looking up pin cherry on wikipedia and see if this is your tree.

I don't think it's bitter cherry. Definitely not choke cherry. The fruit of both of those tends to grow in dense clusters (at least from the photos that Google brings up) whereas the wild cherries I'm talking about have a few cherries per cluster. There is a large one (at least there used to be) next to the bathrooms at Potlatch State Park on Hood Canal.

In theory, pin cherries don't go down south as far as Puget sound but they can hybridize with bitter cherries, so your tree could be some other hybrid of a bitter cherry...better take some pictures next summer. cool.gif

Almost all fruit trees planted are grafted onto hardy rootstocks. If unmaintained suckers will come off the rootstocks and bear fruit. Lake Ozette is surrounded with crab apples from this phenomenon. Potlatch has been setteled a long time these may be the remnant rootstock of grafted trees from long ago which were originally bing or another variety.
