Spending some time in the Columbia River Basin. Decided to explore Turtle Rock Island
Island from east shore
Paddling out
Arrival
Lots of deer activity
Headed to the high point
Strange to see coyote tracks. Quite the swim for a dog
Sunset Not far, and unrelated....
Stopped counting @ 100 head

up.gif Interesting spot one of my hiking partners lives on the West side of the river. I think that is considered a private and sacred area and off limits though boaters do pull up to it. EAST WENATCHEE — With rocky head lifted and craggy tail extended, the sharp outline of Turtle Rock — the 150-acre island and iconic local landmark — forms the unmistakable shape of … well, a turtle. Barring an earthquake, the reptile isle should remain rock solid, facing northeast and tempting trespassers (officially, it’s off limits to visitors) with its sandy beach, top-o’-the-turtle peak and boat-only access. _Wenatchee World

Beautiful photos. up.gif I think one reason it has restricted visitation is because the PUD has some fish facilities there.

Thanks. Abandoned Chinook facility. I believe it was moved up stream about 40 miles to Chelan Falls It's a obscure proclaimed wildlife refuge, and yes, hiking is prohibited past the shoreline. I'm not aware, nor have I read or been told about important nesting habitat or any rare species. Plant or animal Thats not a excuse to trespass, as I did it anyway Rattlesnakes, coyotes and deer have all they need to survive on the island. A new sub species in the making? By the way, island was created in the mid / late 50's with the construction of the Rocky Reach Dam

I've been told by a Chelan resident that Turtle Rock Island is "infested" with rattlers. How would one know unless they spent time there (illegally it seems)? Or maybe my informer or an acquaintance of theirs touched the shore and saw one or two snakes, therefore concluding the island is infested. I tend to be suspious of anecdotes as evidence for most things, so do any of you Eastside NW hikers know more about the relative snake population there? It seems there would have to be adequate prey to permit a substantial pop. of predators. Yarbrolee, nice pictures of the deer convention, by the way! smile.gif

I'm so old I can remember when it wasn't an island! The old highway is under water on the east side. I think the reservoir, Lake Entiat, was raised in 1961. It was an interesting time with watching all the houses, etc., being moved and then watching the river, land and roads disappearing under the new "lake". I plead the fifth as to whether I've ever hiked around out there.

You are not the only one. I can remember driving to Wenatchee from Entiat and going right along side what is now Turtle Rock. Also, Standing out in front of Entiat High School between classes and watching the water slowly consume our beloved old town of Entiat.

Did a panoramic image from the same spot 4 consecutive days. Weather was different every day.
My favorite. Low hanging clouds and different shades of white & gray. ( not a black & white )

Other Christmas Meanderings. Hwy2 east through Pine Canyon towards Waterville. North towards Mansfield. West down McNiel Canyon to Beebe Bridge
Hwy2 Pine Canyon
Crest of Pine Canyon Hwy2 ( aka "the flats" ) Feels like a Arctic landscape
Sunset on "the flats". Don't need to be in the mountains to experience AlpenGlow
4 O'Clock shadow
Moses Mountain? Facing northeast. Glow in center of picture. Super clear evening and facing that direction, I can't think of any other peak it could possibly be. Anybody?
McNiel Canyon. Facing west
Lake Chelan

Where were you when you took the photo? Is this up on the Waterville Plateau? Chester Butte is the only thing that sticks up for a long way.

Hi Mike. No, not quite. We were north of Waterville just west of Mansfied and the image is northeast towards Nespelem. It's somewhere on the Colville Reservation. Sun was setting and reflecting off that mountain. So bright, and initially I thought it was the moon rise. Curious if anybody could positively identify from my poor quality photo
