Local PB winner's place still under construction. They only won a little less than $¼B. wink.gif FWIW they were upper middle class and financially secure before the win. Keeping a bunch of my friends employed. The site before they clearcut the shoreline.

Of course, harmless fun to have fantasy about "what I would do"
I have that fantasy, too, but I don't pay for mine. Figure I'm about as likely to find the winning ticket on the sidewalk or even sitting on my desk as I am to buy it at a gas station. So why should I pay someone else for the right to have certain thoughts?

I feel sorry for folks who are so wrapped up in "reality" that they can't have a little fun dreaming. I dream of catching the big one when I fish. I dream of perfect weather when I am outdoors...and it costs me at least $2 in gas just to get somewhere I can dream. I wonder if any of the lottery naysayers fish? Especially for Steelhead. Now there are some terrible odds for ya and you can't buy a Steelhead rig for $2!

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

We should cut off any hope for the poor and grind them in the dirt so they know they are an inferior species. All worship our affluent overlords. wink.gif

better to give them false hope so they keep their traps shut...don't want them doing something that might actually change "the way it is". The peasants didn't invent the guillotine...they just turned it back on their "masters" and their master's masters.

Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

Yeah, why not just do what works for you and respect what works for others? I like Schenk's fishing analogy.

What's with all this "step on the poor", or "tax the poor" BS? "They" can choose to buy a lottery ticket, or not, just like I can. Have I missed some tongue in cheek humor here? Yeah, I realize it's early-winter and cabin fever must be getting to some of you early, but send me a clue willya?

Moonspots, I don't know who coined the phrase, but I think I first heard it in my economics classes. Lotteries are called taxes on the poor because they generate public revenues from the poor who allegedly buy most of the tickets. As many have suggested here, rather than a voluntary tax paid by stupid people who don't understand the odds, lotteries may provide value in the form of hope to the players. The right to play a game could also have entertainment value. People pay to play tennis for example. Anyway, that's enough pedantry for one day. I have a visceral dislike of lotteries. They just seem sleazy to me somehow. You'll know we are nearing the bottom when the federal government starts offering a lottery to fund the Forest Service.
