That's kind of bizarre to find a coin worth a significant amount of money and receive nothing in return but a piece of paper, lol.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

Rules for turning over treasure and artifacts are a bit bizarre. If it's a historically significant artifact and the finder is required to turn it in that's one thing, but the finder should absolutely be reimbursed a fair monetary value by the government. After all, the finder did everyone a service by finding the object in the first place, otherwise it effectively did not exist as far as anyone knew.

It does seem she should received some sort of finders fee. However, it sound s like she is fine with it; perhaps she's wealthy enough that the money wasn't important? The experience of finding something like that might be something of a reward in itself!

The laws will, of course, vary from country to country but in Israel "When an antiquity is discovered or found in Israel after the coming into force of this Law, it shall within boundaries fixed by the Director become the property of the State." Israeli law defines an antiquity as "Any object, whether detached or fixed, which was made by man before the year 1700 of the general era ..." The law provides for rewarding finders and waiving a claim to a find.

I found a Raymond Weil 24k ladies gold watch, with diamonds at the Ice Caves several years ago, it was early November and a bit of snow was falling, i looked down and there it was, had a broken band, but still worked and had the correct time. The newer versions of the one I found (maybe a 8 year old version?) go for about $1,200. Searched lost and found ads, to no avail.

The finder did not do anyone any service, sorry. Quite possibly they did harm, as now the exact location of the find in relation to the surroundings is lost. The laws should seem even more necessary based on the ignorance and professed criminal intent shown in this thread. If you are hiking somewhere, know the rules of that place. Not that difficult to understand.
