The annual western Forest Fire Lookout Association conference is being held in John Day Oregon. It is always fun and has a great bunch of people.. Please contact me for any further information. 2016 FFLA Western Conference June 10th - 12th John Day, Oregon The 2016 FFLA Western Regional Conference, hosted by Director Howard Verschoor with the help of Rex Kamstra and other Oregon Chapter members, will be held in John Day. While several conferences have been held in Oregon, this is the first to be held in Eastern Oregon. John Day is located at the intersection of US Highways 26 and 395, a two and a half hour drive south of Pendleton, three and a half hours northwest of Boise, ID, and five hours east of Portland. This year’s event will take place in Keerins Hall at the Grant County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds are located on Bridge Street, four blocks north of the town’s main street. Registration will be $30 per person, with an early $25 rate until June 5th. The single day drop-in rate will be $10 (no dinner). The fairgrounds ia a “tobacco-free” area, users will have to step off the grounds or go inside their vehicle to partake. The general format will follow that of previous conferences in the Northwest. A lookout tour is planned for early arrivals on Thursday, meeting at the fairgrounds at 9:00 a.m. to go to Prairie City, Frazier Point and Antelope Mountain. An informal group gathering is likely to take place Thursday evening; further details will be made available to early registrants. Friday morning at the Fairgrounds will begin with registration and setup of displays and the silent auction at 8:00, followed by the general session starting at 9:00. Friday’s agenda is planned to focus on agency presentations. The afternoon tour will be to Black Butte and Ritter Butte. Sub sandwiches are planned for Friday evening’s dinner around the fire pits at the fairgrounds, with a BYOB option available. A short board meeting is also expected to take place that evening. The Saturday session will begin at 8:00 with a focus on FFLA topics. The afternoon tour will be to Aldrich Mountain, with time afterward for visiting local attractions, such as the Kam Wah Chung Heritage Site, before reconvening at Keerins Hall for pizza dinner, additional presentations, story-telling, and the conclusion of the silent auction. The Sunday tour will be to the south, to Fall Mountain, Dry Soda, Flagtail, Calamity Butte, and if time, King Mountain. For those staying longer, there will be plenty of opportunities for Monday, whether visiting lookouts, or other area attractions such as the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument or the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.
