The farm mentioned on the far upper left side on this 1850's map is somewhat described in this Wiki article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Cowlitz The farm was a large operation with numerous buildings and shops, a manager and many employees. I've read a list of crops that the farm grew and it was extensive, some I'd never heard of. But I can't find much info. about this important historic farm on the internet. If you know anything about it please share here.

The history of the HBC in this region is quite interesting. Steven A. Anderson has a number of good articles in Columbia magazine on local HBC activities. (Columbia is published by the Washington State Historical Society - the Tacoma Public Library downtown has all back issues.) The spring 1996 issue has an article on Cowlitz Farms. Anderson has also written an article on farming operations in Steilacoom. James Gibson's Farming the Frontier (link below) has a lot of detail on the PSAC including Cowlitz Farms. http://www.amazon.com/Farming-Frontier-Agricultural-Opening-1786-1846/dp/0774802197

Interesting history that we stumbled across.
I believe that he probably worked at the farm. We stayed a few days in his house at Geārrannan on Lewis.

Some more info about Fort Cowlitz/Cowlitz Farms: http://start-wa.com/cowlitz_farm.html This area would really have been something to see back in the early 19th century!
