May 20, 2016 The FDA today finalized the new Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods to reflect new scientific information, including the link between diet and chronic diseases such as obesity and heart disease. The new label will make it easier for consumers to make better informed food choices.

It's about time that they added a percentage daily value for sugar.

I rather pitied the poor guy who works for the sugar lobby who for his job had to attack the changes as unscientific.

The FDA, like many government entities, is still years behind. As I understand it, food establishments are only required to post caloric information. The rest of the nutritional information should be available upon request, but doesn't need to be posted. And not every food establishment falls under this criteria. Yes, calories are super important to pay attention to - but they are not the only thing to be mindful of, and certainly not so important that they need to be in size 20 bold font. Sugar remains the elephant in the room that the FDA really doesn't want to talk about.

Nutrition junkies like myself appreciate any and all information we can get about the food we consume, but I see the larger print for the calories being the most useful change here. It's nice not to have to reach for my reading glasses when looking at the label!
