Looks like we are experiencing a database issue that is generating error messages. So far I've noticed this prevents editing posts or viewing PMs. We are looking into it.

Seems deleting posts is a problem as well.

Put in a temporary fix. Hopefully this will minimize the error messages.

Unfortunately we had a major database crash on Saturday, a few days after the first problems surfaced. Not sure what caused this but we suspect it was related to our web host upgrading the database software earlier in the week. We've restored the database from our Saturday morning backup onto a new server and crossing our fingers this will fix the problems. If not we may need to shut the site down until we can upgrade our forum software.

Are the missing posts gone for good, or can they be retrieved? Just before the crash, I posted a TR of 7FJ and now it's missing. It was posted long enough before the total crash that a reply had also been posted.

Unfortunately it can't be retrieved. The posts text table is the one that crashed, and there was no way to recover it other than from the backup made earlier that morning. You could see if google cached the TR before the site went down. "search google for some exact phrase in quotes followed by" site:nwhikers.net

You don't know what you got until it's gone.

More Ideas for Retrieving Lost Pages: 1) Google shows the old Trip Report index page linking to the old Seven Fingered Jack report. The 7FJ is erased (lost) from the main link's current version, so choose the cached version of the Google result (down-triangle-drop-down-menu to the right of the green text; click and choose "cached") and, in the cache, you see 7FJ's link used to be this:https://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8021681: Now an error message. Does its cache exist? (That is, a non-errored-version of the cache?; in this case, the answer is "yes, if you're quick about it.") 2) Search Google for ideas: You'll see more options beyond just Google cache and the Wayback Machine. 3) The third or fourth search-result hit brings you to searchengineshowdown. Lots of ideas. Try each one. (Plugging in what we now know used to be the url for the 7FJ page: https://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8021681 ) 4) In the case of the Seven Fingered Jack report, it is referenced in the Yahoo results. The link, itself, is a nwhiker-error-page, but click the inconspicuous drop-down menu (carat symbol) to the right of the green text and choose "cache" (just like for Google cache, but Yahoo cache). 5) The Seven Fingered Jack report is there in all of its original beauty in Yahoo's cache. (But not sure how long it will last !! before the cache gets overwritten by the more recent error-version of the page [that contains just a nwhikers.net error message]! ) (Come to think of it, the good-version-of-the-cache might be there a long time assuming search-robots only travel along existing, valid links . . . and since there is no live, valid link pointing to the 7FJ page anymore . . . maybe there's no risk of a web-bot trying to re-surf to the 7FJ page to update its cache page with the current error-page. Maybe. Maybe not.) 6) The cache (for Yahoo, anyway) shows the nice-looking, end-result page in the nwhiker.net-format that the end-reader is normally used to seeing . . . but in terms of moving the cached-stuff back into the nwhiker poster's-format (using nwhikers.net tags, like [img] [/img], etc.), that looks like it might have to be done by hand, again. At least you'll have the visual reminder of the previous layout and will be able to copy and paste the text parts. You can probably skip some steps (like the roundabout Google steps) and just use searchengineshowdown directly to find cached versions using Tom's technique: "search phrase followed by" site:nwhikers.net (assuming that syntax works in other search engines, like Yahoo, etc.) It would be interesting to see a list of topics that were edited those last 24-hours before the crash (that would have been lost to the daily back-up) to see if they're any other caches that should be explored and retrieved in a timely manner. Not sure if such a list exists.
