What are the safety issues, if any, these days in that part of the world? |
People there said that things were much safer now and that even the Swat Valley - which was a complete no-go zone 3yrs ago, on my previous visit - was now open for tourists. Personally, I'd say there's always a slight risk, but the place is just so incomparably beautiful... So, I'd say go, but talk it over with relatives first.
Part IV is now up.

Awe inspiring trip, amazing photos as always in your reports. In addition to everything else that makes them so photogenic, I hadn't appreciated how colorful the rocks are in the Karakoram.

In this regard they are similar to the Teanaway, which I've always appreciated for the colorful rock.

OMG you are so incredibly awesome to experience another trekking adventure in the Karakorams. your photography and beautifully written account of your trek are magnificent!
thank you for taking me to a part of our small world i know i will be unable to visit on my own ...
i truly appreciate what you wrote about the porters and their riverdance. i can visualize them with their arms crossed and maneuvering their way across crevasses and boulders! most excellent

They had built a wall around the Manthal Buddha Rock and you had to be let in by a guard if you wanted to go and see it. As you say, the carvings were pretty impressive. Also, note the square hole at the top. The rock was situated on the top of a hill, overlooking the town. Evidently, the hole was created for a lamp to be placed there, so that the rock would be visible from town.

So many amazing pictures! Thanks for taking the time to share your journey with us. I'll admit I'd never heard of any of those peaks. Seems like if they aren't 8,000 m, most of us westerners don't know their names. Some amazing mountains, certainly worthy of being more well known.

American climbers missing on Ogre II.
Hoping for the best.
Edit: I think the mountain on the far left in this photo is Ogre II:

Edit #2: This morning (9/3/16), on the first clear weather window, after multiple helicopter passes and no sign of Scott and Kyle the difficult decision was taken to abandon further search efforts. RIP.

Thank you for posting Gali. I enjoy your photography, even the "walk in the park" photos from the east coast. I read this and your previous TR from this region many times. You take great photos and know how to word your explorations.
