UPDATE 12/8/2016: the new lightbox feature has been enabled site-wide. You may notice many images need to be re-built before the lightbox can display them. This is a one time process to re-calculate image dimensions to allow display of larger sizes for flickr, smugmug, and google (picasa). It is necessarily slow to prevent overloading the server (there are more than a half million photos so we need to re-build them on the fly).
Labels should be working now as well. You need to be logged in. To edit a label just click on the label and edit away. To move a label drag the crosshairs. To delete a label, delete the text (then hit save). To add a new label click on the downward pointing arrow at the top right of the lightbox and click the appropriate option.
The lightbox should make viewing/navigating images much easier/faster. It is touch friendly so you can swipe left/right (in addition to using the keyboard arrow keys) to navigate. It will automatically fit images to the viewport and allow zooming in.
I would recommend posting at least 1600 pixel size images to flickr, google, etc. going forward.

All looks and works well on Chrome here. I like the ability to 'wrap around' from the last to first photo instead of getting stuck.

Should work in all modern browsers. Older mobile browsers may have some issues. IE 8+ is supported (but functionality might be limited in IE 8-9). Edge has a few quirks (can't pan image with 2 finger touchpad gesture when zoomed in due to bug MS has ignored for ~2 years). Desktop chrome is choppy for me when using the zoom button (even with browser hardware acceleration enabled - could just be my computer but Firefox and Edge are buttery smooth). Note: if you have an old computer or graphics card zoom may be choppy.

Pictures display fine on 8 year old Mac. Zoom button works fine, but no buttons for Next/Previous picture.

Mac OS X version 10.5.8
Firefox 16.0.2
If I click to "open in new window" I get an enlarged image with no back/forward buttons. If I just click on an image, it zooms to full size in a box, and I have back and forward arrow buttons at the edges of the page..

Ah, that makes sense. If you click open in new window it bypasses the lightbox and opens the raw image in a new window. I can change things so that it will open the lightbox in a new window.

Mac OS X 10.6.8
Firefox 48.0.2
Chrome 49.0.2623.112 64 bit
Using Mac OS X 10.6.8, both of these browsers show back/forward buttons after a single click or as a right-click "open in a new window"
Looking forward to whatever you're cookin' up. Thanks for all the hard work.

OK, I made it so "open in new window" should always open the lightbox. Be sure to refresh the page to get the latest version.
I also added a labeled pano to test (labels are read only, you can move/edit but not save or add labels yet).
