A friend and I hiked a 10-11 mile loop from the Mt Hood Meadows trailhead. We headed towards Elk Meadows, turned left up Newton Creek, left on the Timberline Trail, crossed the Clark drainage and the Meadows ski area, and returned via Umbrella Falls. It was a fairly warm and partly cloudy mid-October trip.
We had thought of hiking in Indian Heaven, but a worsening forecast pushed us south. Fall colors were well past peak but still out there.
Mt Hood was only a bit in the clouds today
Lamberson Butte dominates the north side of the Newton drainage
The Clark Creek drainage with a little early fall snow higher up
mountain ash berries
The Clark Creek canyon was the scenic treat of this route
Betsy enjoys a small waterfall
We took our lunch break next to a larger waterfall
Crossing was not too hard
A little slippery slope to traverse for me
Looking back at the trail as it approaches Clark Creek
