Not a good year for matsutake, I think the rains came too late. I found a couple dozen today in areas that usually produce grocery bags full. On the east side of the crest they were in very good shape, just very sparse. On the west side, there were a lot more, but most were soggy and wormy, even the buttons. It looks a short and sparse season this year, at least in the central Washington cascades.

Been a good year so far in the Blue Mountains north. Lots of morels and oysters below the 4200 foot level. After this weekend's rain and next week's 85 degree plus temperatures, morels should been found a above the 4200 foot level. Pigs ears should be out also. (Now to avoid the Memorial day crowds.......)

Any mushrooms showing up yet ? I guess it's a bit early with the rain just happening.

I checked a couple of the usual chanterelle spots yesterday just to see if anything was up yet. Nope. (spots are out between Ashford/MRNP). I think next week-ish might be good, but not yet. There were lobsters in various states, though! hockeygrin.gif But, even if there hadn't been any mushrooms, it's always a gift to walk in the quiet, green, damp woods to renew spirits. Happy Autumn Hiking!

The West Seattle Thriftway has had lobster mushrooms and chanterelles the past few weeks, which makes me think they're popping up somewhere nearby,

On October 1st I found some hericiums (bear's head) off highway 20 near Rainy Pass. They were growing on fallen logs in a climax forest. One was the size of a toddler and perfectly clean and white, one of the best specimens I've ever found. That same weekend I was camping with friends in the Baker Lake area and did not see any lobsters or chanterelles in the usual spots.

i found some very nice chicken of the woods. i was not aware that you shouldnt eat it if its growing on dead evergreens. tasted good, but left me and my lady feeling a little funny in the tummy.

That's scary. When I saw the earlier post, my thought was, hmm, eating off wood doesn't sound good.

Chicken of the woods always grows on wood. We have two species here, one grows on hardwoods the other softwood. Both are edible.
