I would do just fine. I navigate primarily via map & compass. I print [waterproof] paper maps from PDF files and have hundreds of DIY paper maps.

Lately I've been trying ArcGIS World and GoogleEarth Pro. Very powerful. It's a little hard to find the data but there is an amazing amount out there when you look. e.g. WA State, County and federal data bases. I have the state trails database, state and federal roads, lidar, tax parcels, shorelines... You name it, it's out there.

I have been using and loading maps off gpsfiledepot.com onto my Montana, and they are pretty good but those CalTopo maps look more complete. Is it possible to load those onto a Garmin with Basecamp or MapSource? I poked around the website but it looked like Google no longer supported the plug-ins needed to load maps to a Garmin device on Chrome. Do I really need to install Explorer to make CalTopo work and load maps to a Garmin GPS? It also looks like you must load the whole thing onto your GPS, is that true? I am a bit of a Luddite so any insight is appreciated!

I think that the only maps that will work on your Montana are the maps from gpsfiledepot.com or similar or from Garmin if you want to pay. They are a proprietary format. You can load routes and tracks from many sources but not maps. Try here for hacks and custom map making openstreet maps for garmin excellent and free UK maps
