Yeah, the cycling version has been incredibly popular for a long time. (A year? That's forever in internet years.)
A lot of people don't want to ride in the winter because of the foul weather and the darkness. Some of them don't want to give up their hard won fitness, and ride indoors through the off season. It can be very boring and feel like you're a hamster on a wheel. Zwift is a virtual reality playground to make it less awful.
They don't officially support running yet, but it seems like they're about to.
