-6 this morning at the Ellensburg homestead. Sunny though, not like last winter's North Dakota look. Right now it's -2. The Yakima River has ice floes and above Roza Dam is covered in ice. Do NOT goout on it. The river is still flowing beneath the ice. Lots of raptors out looking for lunch.

up.gif Had an eagle pacing my truck along the Yakima today while driving to work, they really are amazing. One Christmas there was a dead deer out in front of the family compound on top of the berm, and we had days of entertainment watching the eagles fight over it. lol.gif

One of my dogs predicted this weather. Starting around the end of October and continuing til almost the end of November he blew more fur out of his coat than he has in the nine years I've had him.

Is Wenatchee fogged in? During one Methow cold snap, we would go up skiing at the Loup where it would be warmer than down in the valley. It was enough of a change that you could feel it. Meanwhile, 14 above here in the banana belt. My road has that clear ice stuff on the worst part.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

No fog in the valley (at least not at mid-day when I noted the temperature difference). In fact it was a stunning view day on the top of Mission.

WENATCHEE — Morning temperatures dropped to a record-equaling minus 1 degree Thursday in Wenatchee. Lows were expected to flirt with zero this morning as well, before incoming clouds begin to offer some insulation from the Arctic cold. Thursday's low equaled the mark set in 1974, according the records kept since 1959 by the National Weather Service at Pangborn Memorial Airport. Leavenworth temperatures dropped to minus 7 Thursday. Winthrop recorded a low of minus 15 and Omak, minus 5.

Just checked the snowpack basin report for 1-13 and surprised to see that most basins are not above average in snowpack. The one near me (Lower Columbia) is at 131%, and that is the highest. Olympic is second percentage-wise at 119%. The rest of the Washington Cascades are within 10% of average (No Casc at 92%) and everything east of the Cascades is below average, mostly in the 70s and 80s percent of average. These numbers apply to snow water equivalent, not snow depth. http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/ftpref/data/water/wcs/gis/maps/wa_swepctnormal_update.pdf By contrast, Oregon appears to be at about 130% almost statewide.

ditto.gif Imagine the snow pack if we had this cold and the jet stream pointed at us instead of California. Wowza.

This is just mother nature's payback for our record warm november. But it looks like she's got a nice pineapple express lined up for us next week.

It's been warmer in the hills around here as well. The cold air sinks of course. Stopped a few days ago at Watt Canyon, there were a couple of hundred elk grazing on the hay at the feeding station. I've seen red tails every day, even had a Merlin in the yard checking out the food.
