With all the Mt Washington reports of late we went up today to take advantage of the trail. We were able to boot to the top! Folks are keeping it packed. Blowing snow was filling in a few sections. We then snowshoed over to Greenway (4440+) to the east.

I'm sure most of you know this already, but if you're planning to do Rattlesnake Ledges any time soon, bring Microspikes or Yaktrax. dizzy.gif It's packed snow and ice from the parking lot all the way up. After getting turned around last winter because not everyone in our party had traction, we made it up there yesterday. Also, the Costco "Snowtrax" by Yaktrax were worthless on the way down for my husband. Don't waste your $10, get something better. My kids were in YakTrax or the Eddie Bauer knockoffs, and I had Kahtoolas. wub.gif The YakTrax worked Pretty well, only a few small slips here and there. But there is not enough snow for snowshoes.
And, snow pants are too hot for kids to hike in. Even with the windchill.

Halemau'u Trail, Haleakala National Park, Jan 3, 2017 Halemau'u Trail, Haleakala National Park! this trail starts at 7990 ft. and is completely different from the Heonehe'ehe'e (sliding sands) Trail. it's green, and rockier. Mark and i started the hike early and there were needle ice along the trail. cold!! the hike back up was warm! i made it to the crater floor at the gate, while Mark waited for me at our lunch spot. perfect little 6 mile day hike! Aloha and Maui No Ka Oi

My latest jaunt up the Index Town Wall. Still wondering what's going on up there with the clearing. Last time I was in town the outfitters were talking about a zip line. http://www.musthikemusteat.com/hwy-2/index-town-wall/

You don't find yourself standing at the top of a mountain without having started out in the valley.

Icicle Ridge is lovely. (1/11/17) Not a single post-hole scars the entire trail to the saddle. Snow is knee deep at the saddle.

Panorama Point 1-28-17 Waited in line at the gate at Longmire until it opened at 9 and hit the trail as soon as possible. Conga line up to Panorama Point. I was with a friend who was snowshoeing for his first time and on poor equipment so he was a bit slow, so I picked powder over the trail whenever possible to slow me down and maximize my workout. Great views and good exercise! Lots of people as always.

Had Monday off so I headed up to Stevens Pass to check out Skyline and Lanham without the crowds. Based on the tracks and litter from the weekend, I think I made the right call. Anyone need a Duraflame log? Only a little bit singed... Snow is pretty hard and crunchy, would love some fresh powder. Saw only two other people on trail all day and even had a little bit of sunshine! http://www.musthikemusteat.com/snowshoes/lanham-lake-snowshoe/ http://www.musthikemusteat.com/snowshoes/skyline-lake-snowshoe/

Wow. This embiggens nicely. Great perspective on a place that I have always just driven through on the way to somewhere else. Love the horse! At first I thought it was a person in a hat with ears, then a dog, and finally it dawned on me that you were on the back of a horse. I haven't been on a horse since my young adulthood. We used them to work cattle. Such an ancient feeling--that relationship with a horse. Thanks for the view. ~z

Snowed here all day. @#! Canadian outflow! Rather than brave the roads the pup and I headed up to Mt Grant. It's about 2mi. and 600' mixed going through the bush from our door. Mt Grant is a recent purchase by the Land Bank and San Juan Preservation Trust. Nice to have in the backyard smile.gif

Smith Rock from a couple days ago. Trails were icy and my wife didn't have good traction devices, so we didn't make it far.

Tumalo State park yesterday. Traction devices were necessary. Sunshine and blue sky definitely makes this a nice option, only a 5 minute drive from my house. Not much mileage but relaxing.
