The drive to Mt. Dickerman Trailhead was snow free and clear. Reached the TH @ 11:00 and got underway by 11:15. The trail was clear and in great shape until 4,000 ft. where I ran into patchy snow and then at 4,200 ft. it became continuous all the way to the summit. The snow was compacted down from others snowshoeing and booting it in. I was able to stay on top of the snow w/o any problems. Some areas were a bit slippery but not in general. An absolute clear day w/360 degree views from Baker to Glacier to Rainier and everything else in-between. Normally at this time of year the Mtn. Loop Hwy. is closed at Deer Creek because of snow. The road is clear all the way to Barlow Pass. You may view some pictures that I posted at Webshots. Here’s the link: http://community.webshots.com/album/239204266KufgCO

Welcome to the site and thanks for the report on Dickerman. You just shouldn't ought to be able to get there this time of year. I also liked the photos of the wayward bear cub on Pilchuck a few years ago. I remeber when it hung around the trail for several weeks.

Bear cub photos
Thanks Jim. The story behind the pictures on the bear cub goes like this. On June 26th 2002. I stopped at the Verlot ranger station before heading up to Mt. Pilchuck and was told of a bear cub that was near the lookout and not to feed it. Well once I got to the lookout some folks up there said that there was this bear cub stuck below in these rocks. I went down to investigate and found this bear had crawled inside of this small talus cave. It was drawn in by some candy wrappers and a gator aid bottle. At times it would try and get out through this triangular opening that was maybe a quarter of its size. Well it could only get it’s head through and one paw at a time. Its nose was dry and looked to be stressed out. I thought that some water might be good for this stranded cub. So I asked to borrow someone’s nalgene bottle and I got down to the opening where it had its head sticking out and poured some water into the cap and allowed the cub to lap some up. After three laps it decided to bite down on the cap. When I pulled it away from its mouth, some water fell on one of its paws. Once this happened it started to back down. So I poured more water and it backed all the way into the cave. Then I borrowed someone’s trekking pole and stuck it in towards the cub and it kept going backwards until it backed out of the cave and onto a rock slab. Once it got onto this slab it would try and put on leg down onto a lower rock, but keep retreating back to the slab. It was then that I was able to get some really good photos. At one point I was below this slab and was focusing in on the cub to get the face shot that’s posted on webshots. When I took the shot and brought the camera down from my face I realized that it was only 3 ft. away. The wide-angle lens had given me the impression that it had been further away. Anyways that’s how all of those bear cub pictures came about. I’m glad you enjoyed them. For those of you that would like to check the photos out, here’s the link: http://community.webshots.com/album/42073735DULFGJ

Great report. What a fantastic day to get out and enjoy the better aspects of a weak winter. As others have mentioned, your collection of images is top notch. This one is especially interesting to me. When catching a sunset, I rarely pay much attention to the what's happening behind me. I'll have to make a point of changing that.
