This hike was all about exploring several landforms associated with an ancient volcanic field in western Montana. The volcano, which was active during the late 70-80 million years ago, left its mark on the landscape. (lots of photos) One Kill Site, 4 Buttes, and a Big, Grouchy Bear

You sure hit the greenest week of the year. Bear 🐻 on the prairie. It's so strange to see a bear that doesn't just keep eating or run away. Wow. The buffalo jump. Is this one that has been investigated? How often was it used. I'd need a bike to do miles like that. Great day.

Keep Calm and Carry On? Heck No. Stay Excited and Get Outside!

Great report and geology lesson. I took the virtual field trip. Dumb question: was the bear a grizzly? It was big and brown, but the head profile wasn't dish-shaped or was it? And is that a hump? Whichever it was, it looked pretty big. yikes. ~z

Zephyr, Not a dumb question! It was not a grizzly, but they are starting to see grizzlies on the prairie east of the mountains. I should have know better than to be hiking without bear spray. They tend to follow the rivers for miles. A couple years ago, there were a couple near Ft. Benton - over 100 miles east of the mountains. -Rod

Great Report. I see you visited St Peters Mission. We were there about 10 years ago. My Grandmother had connections to St Peters Mission.

Thanks, bigskywalker for the clarification. I just kept looking at that muzzle and thinking it must be a cinnamon-colored black bear. Great story. ~z

Nice pictures! I've driven highway 200 many times and spend some time around Augusta. It's a beautiful area. Thanks for sharing!
