These apparently have some aluminum thread woven into them that's suppose to "reflect heat" back to your body.
There are three forms of heat transfer - Conduction, Convection, and Radiation.
Aluminum is useful in reducing radiation heat transfer as it's both a poor absorber and poor radiator. (Same reason most emergency space blankets are made of aluminum foil.)
On the other hand Aluminum is an extremely good thermal conductor ~5000 times better compared to wool.
If you looked at the extreme case of an all aluminum sock, you would pretty much stop most Radiation heat transfer, but they would be very cold due to the high conductive heat transfer.
I expect some good thick wool socks would perform as well, and be far more comfortable.
