Big Jim said it years ago when Larry Penberthy complained about putting defective locking crabs in a box on the climbing checkout for $0.50 labeled not for climbing for decoration only, "We are merchants not climbers".

Very retro. How many will know who Larry and Big Jim are, and just why REI was selling defective crabs (like Deadliest Catch?)?

Somewhat recently REI started hosting a full time garage sale site: https://www.rei.com/rei-garage
That is not the garage sale I'm speaking of; that site is just the renamed REI Outlet. No, I mean the basement garage sale section in the flagship store that housed mostly returned items. Which can now only be purchased via the stupid mass hysteria mega line 2x per year sales. Yoga clothing? Seriously? Obviously, the CEO and others making decisions like that are pretty clueless as to why REI was started. Yes, the company must evolve and innovate, but that ain't the way to do it, kids.

Obvious observation of the day smile.gif I think the CEO read the thread here at NWH titled "Just how could REI suck more..." and decided to show just how REI could in fact suck more. According to the WSJ, REI is up for the prestigious "This retaierl blows" trophy, awarded evry year to an American buisness that just sucks. The trophy is an actual plastic Chevy Citation reproduced at 1/64 scale.

Which is all the more ironically stupid since they're not a publicly traded company. Someone should poke with him a hiking pole and remind him who he serves.

I think he serves his $3.5 million pay check. He does whats good for this stupid model they've bought into where they are all about competing with big retailers, with no thought to what they should sell. They've even cooked the books to make it harder for an outsider to serve on the board, now basically you have to be annointed as having drank the cool-aid and done the right kind of yoga. This link will allow you to see the list of who they consider their corporate peers to be: https://www.rei.com/content/dam/documents/pdf/Financial%20Statements/2015%20Executive%20Compensation%20Summary.pdf
