One area of focus is advocating for a new bridge across the Suiattle for Milk Ck. http://www.wta.org/signpost/to-find-lost-trails-in-2017-wta-focuses-on-historic-connections

Always being one to relish opening a can of worms so to speak the following is taken from a DRAFT USFS volunteer agreement. As a USFS volunteer you agree to: "Unsanctioned trail work. All trail maintenance, or other activities to establish or keep open historic, closed routes or trails, is expressly prohibited and is a violation of Federal laws and regulations" No idea how WTAs campaign or initiative fits into that.

I thought you know how all this works, Chico! WTA does not perform unsanctioned trail work, that's how their project* fits in. They work with the agencies to plan their schedule, and in the case of funding for a bridge over the Suiattle at the Milk Creek trailhead (not the Milk Creek Bridge as stated in the article), they are helping obtain that funding by working with the USFS to identify ways to advocate for it, probably in a variety of funding sources; Washington state's RCO, for example. To bring back abandoned trails, WTA would work with the agency to determine if the agency even wants the trail worked on, then they come up with a plan/budget/other issues; WTA doesn't just show up unannounced and build trails. * (why is "project" in quotes in your post? confused.gif ) Many folks may recall the survey for the Lost Trails project that WTA invited the public to participate in - I think it was last year (?). This is the result of that survey. The wishes for a new bridge over the Suiattle at Milk Creek was not a surprise, no doubt!

You can bet that PCTA is all in on the Milk Creek bridge as well. With the destruction of that bridge, that left the PCT near Milk Creek in an extremely difficult to access position. It's roughly 40 PCT miles between where the N. Fork Sauk and Suiattle River trails join the PCT. Add 7-8 miles on either access trail and that makes a ~28 mile hike to get to the middle, where the Milk Creek Trail joined the PCT - a solid 2 day hike each way for any maintenance crews. Being able to go up Milk Creek would reduce that to a comfortable 1 day access. The conditions in that area show the difficulty of access. Rough numbers I've heard bandied about indicate a new bridge is on the order of upper 6 / just into 7 figures, once all the NEPA studies, engineering and, finally, construction are taken into consideration. Hopefully the funds can be found before too many more years. I'd volunteer to be on one of the first crews to head up that way to help reopen Milk Creek once the bridge is in.
