The Mountaineers are wondering which peaks still have this type of register container on them. This question originated from these Mountaineers posts on Instagram and Facebook
The list of peaks that was here was removed by the OP after about a month of gathering a few additions. It's prudent to not leave the list here long term to extend the life of the remaining registers.

I remember that the one on Phelps has no cap. Is there any way to get another one?

probably a bad thread given the nature of register removal by the register nazis...

Let them go try to get the one off Garfield: Beckey, master of understatement ("scramble up an easy gully") called Garfield "a hazardous enigma".
Bizarre to me how obscure, nearly invisible summit registers are targets but that eyesore, two-placard, self-aggrandizing monstrosity on Mailbox is still there.

The registers on the volcanoes used to be large hardbound ledgers in big bronze boxes. It's been many years since I've seen one of those. |

Those Mountaineers registers were old school, cast alloy, some sorta bronze I think, although I'm not certain. I wonder if the mold is still around.

The boxes I've seen were placed by the Mazamas and were also some sort of cast alloy. Whomever lugged those things to the summits descended with a considerably lighter load. My most recent recollection seeing a Mazama box was on the summit of Olympus in the early 1990s. |

I believe the "mailbox" has been replaced many times -- whether it was removed by winter weather, trophy seekers or "cleaner uppers". |

I've no problem with the mailbox, as it existed for decades.
It's what's been done by the people who built the new trail to pat themselves on the back, a rock and concrete erection with not one, but two glued-on signs, that seems entirely unnecessary and over the top.
Back on topic, there are still Mazamas boxes around. I visited the location of one this weekend.

An article titled "Registers and Canisters: A Grand Northwest Tradition" appears on page 34 in the Summer 2017 issue of "Mountaineer" magazine. This thread was part of the research for that article, which could have been 3 times as long with all the interesting info we dug up.

...and so it begins.

Summit of St Helens. The 9677' version. Rented ice-axe and crampons.
I'm wearing a barely adequate Sportscaster ski-jacket.
The Mazama metal-box register is visible at lower right.
Where do you suppose is it now? |

There is one of these Mazama boxes on the summit of Boston. |

And on Rainier, in the summit crater on the north side. |
