Friday, October 7, 2016 12:34 PDT Olympic National Park News Release Final Road Repairs Underway; Elwha Olympic Hot Springs Road to be Closed to All Entry Beginning Monday, October 10 The Olympic National Park road crew, with help from a local contractor, is putting the finishing touches on two major road repairs this month. The Elwha Valley's Olympic Hot Springs Road will close to all use on Monday, October 10 to allow contractors from Lakeside Industries to pave the newly-repaired section of road. This closure includes foot, bicycle and horse access. During the closure, crews will first smooth and prepare the road for paving. Once preparations are complete, the actual paving will be done as soon as weather conditions allow. Because the paving process is weather dependent, a firm timeline for reopening the road is not available at this time. Crews hope to reopen the road by the end of this month. In the Quinault Valley, the Graves Creek Road will re-open to motor vehicles to its terminus at the Graves CreekTrailhead on Saturday, October 15. The Graves Creek Campground will be open with vault toilets. Potable water is not provided. Both roads have been closed since last November following a series of storms and floods. For more information about visiting Olympic National Park, people should visit the park’s website at http://www.nps.gov.olym www.nps.gov

The road will remain closed for approximately one week at the Mora Ranger Station as repairs are completed. Personnel from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will perform maintenance work on the Rialto Beach jetty and must repair the road in order to insure safe equipment access to the jetty. Working closely with park staff, USACE personnel will complete the road repairs. The road will be closed to all entry, including pedestrians, bicycles and motor vehicles. Cascade River Road is still open as of today, per the North Cascades National Park website. In other news, Mt. Baker - Snoqualmie National Forest just tweeted:

Mile 20 gate on Cascade River Rd closes on Monday. There is a slide across the trail ½mi from the Pass in one of those chutes. Didn't look difficult to cross with traction but if you slip you're back in the parking lot on the third bounce so we didn't risk it.

Wednesday November 16, 2016 13:40 PST Olympic National Park News Release Hoh Road Re-Opens to Hoh Rain Forest, Mora Road to Re-Open Saturday to Rialto Beach, Olympic Hot Springs Road Remains Closed Due to Flood Risk Olympic National Park’s Hoh Rain Forest is once again accessible to motor vehicles, after being closed by storm damage in mid-October. The road is reduced to one-lane travel at the damaged location approximately 5.5 miles inside the park boundary. The inbound lane was partially undercut by the Hoh River. Park crews and contractors have stabilized the river bank and added safety barriers and signs. Motorists should use extra caution and be alert to other drivers in that area. The Mora Road is scheduled to reopen to vehicle traffic by noon this Saturday, November 18. This road has been closed since mid-October to provide safe access for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to repair the Rialto Beach jetty. The Olympic Hot Springs Road remains closed to motor vehicles because of safety concerns related to frequent intermittent flooding of the road. A side channel of the Elwha River has become more active since an October storm event, leading to flooding of the road in an area just upstream of the new bridge. Bicycle and foot access are permitted; visitors should use the bypass trail to avoid the flood-prone area. Park staff have installed temporary stream gauges to assess the severity and frequency of flooding. A timeline for reopening the road has not yet been established, and will be based upon information gathered from the stream gauges. -NPS-

Wednesday, March 01, 2017 11:37 PST Olympic National Park News Release Updated Schedule for Lake Crescent Highway Rehab Project; Construction Now Slated to Begin in Late April The contracting process for rehabilitation of 12 miles of the Lake Crescent section of Highway 101 and 4 miles of East Beach Road is still underway and this spring’s construction schedule has been adjusted. Construction is now slated to begin in late April this year. This project is being managed collaboratively by the the Federal Highway Administration and the National Park Service. The contract notice can be found online at the FedBizOpps website: https://www.fbo.gov/spg/DOT/FHWA/WFL/DTFH7017B00002/listing.html The Invitation for Bid (IFB), along with plan sets and other detailed documents, is also posted there. Forty-five vendors are currently listed as “interested vendors,” with March 7 as the deadline for responses. The cost is estimated to be over $20 million. Bid opening is anticipated on March 7, with construction to begin approximately April 27, 2017. “We look forward to being able to share additional details once a contractor has been selected,” said Olympic National Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum. “In the meantime, however, we can affirm the basic schedule information.” The contract includes a number of requirements aimed at minimizing impacts to travelers and area residents. For example, the contractor is required to immediately open the road to emergency vehicles without delay at all times throughout the project. Additional specific information will be released after the contract is awarded. Further, the construction schedule will vary throughout the season to reduce impacts to the public while still allowing safe and efficient road work. Work will occur on weekdays only and will not be scheduled on holidays or weekends. An outline of the yearly schedule for Highway 101 is provided below. April—Late May Half‐hour delays during work hours, with short delays afterhours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic. Limited 4‐hour delays may be scheduled (from 9:00am – 1:00pm only) and must be announced two weeks in advance. Memorial Day—Labor Day (summer season) Half‐hour delays during work hours, with short delays afterhours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic. Early September— Mid November Half‐hour delays during work hours, with short delays afterhours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic. Limited 4‐hour delays (from 9:00am – 1:00pm only) and 6‐hour overnight delays (10:00pm – 4:00am only) may be scheduled and must be announced two weeks in advance. Mid November—February No construction anticipated March (2018 and 2019 only) Half‐hour delays during work hours, with short delays afterhours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic. Limited 4‐hour delays and 6‐hour overnight delays may be scheduled and will be announced two weeks in advance. The schedule and additional information are available on the Olympic National Park website at https://www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/lake-crescent-highway-101-rehabilitation-2017-19.htm. No more than 20 four‐hour delays are permitted each spring and each fall. Four‐hour delays may only be implemented between Labor Day and Memorial Day and only between the hours of 9:00am and 1:00pm. Emergency vehicles will have access without delay at all times. The contractor will receive monetary incentives for limiting the number of four‐hour delays. Overnight delays lasting up to six hours are permitted between Labor Day and March 31. All six‐hour delays may occur only from 10:00pm—4:00am and may only occur on Mondays through Wednesday. Emergency vehicles will have access without delay at all times. All four‐hour and six‐hour overnight delays must be scheduled and announced two weeks in advance. Notices will be sent to area media outlets, widely distributed via the Washington State Department of Transportation traffic alert webpage (https://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/trafficalerts/ ) and posted on the Olympic National Park website (https://www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/conditions.htm) Repairs to the East Beach Road will be completed during the 2017 construction season, with work completed by November 18. East Beach Road will close to through traffic for a maximum two‐week period to replace one culvert. This closure will include one weekend and will occur between August 1 and October 31, 2017 and will be scheduled and announced in advance. Monetary incentive is offered to the contractor for reducing the length of the closure. East Beach Road was built between 1911 and 1925 and provides access to private residences, Log Cabin Resort and several popular day use areas and links Highway 101 and Highway 112 and as a bypass route around the lake. In 2015, approximately 67,600 vehicles used East Beach Road. The road along Lake Crescent’s south shore was built in the early 1920s, replacing ferry passage across the lake. Today the road is part of U.S. Highway 101 and remains a vital transportation link and popular sightseeing route for visitors to the Lake Crescent area and the Olympic Peninsula. In 2015, over 420,000 vehicles traveled this road. www.nps.gov

Anyone been all the way up the North Fork recently? There's a big slump happening about a couple miles past Sunday Creek that looks like it could go ahead and take the whole road at any moment. Wondering if anyone has heard about plans to fix it, what that might mean for closures this summer, etc.
