Hand nailing was required, in some high wind zones here in Washington state.Proper Hand nailing will hold shingles down better than air driven fasteners.Your gun is operating under constantly changing air pressure from the compressor, driving nails/staples into roof sheathing with varying density.Hand nailing accounts for this, when done properly.IWhen doing a tear off the shingles come off the easiest with staples but the staples stay in the roof.Having done a lot of roofs I would never use staples and would shoot it unless on the coast or some high wind area, then I would hand bang high-wind shingles.
The nails do not really matter.It is the proper flashing, and the quality of the roofing materials, that makes or breaks a roof.
I spent a summer re-roofing cedar roofs that were killed by over washing.Not even ten years old.All the exposed sections of the shingles essentially were blasted away with a pressure washer.I cringe every time I see a pressure washer on a roof.Just food for thought.
