After a protracted weekend of loafing, R and I finally got some exercise walking up to Heather Pass yesterday. The TH is near Rainy Pass on Hwy 20, and was surprisingly crowded for a weekday.
Nice walk, million-dollar views, and gorgeous fall color.
In our gallavanting this weekend, we also ended up at Harts Pass for some fall camping Sunday night. Slept at the Meadows CG, a swell place a la CGs of days gone by. On the primitive side, nothing paved, no water, no fees. The campsite itself was not windy but the wind howled all night. The CG is at 6000' (!!) and surprisingly allows campfires.
Views from around the Slate Peak lookout are outstanding in every direction, and it is an amazing place to be able to reach by car.

Me and my son did the loop in late summer this year-there was still snow at Maple Pass.Wow!-is all I could say when I hit Heather Pass-the wildflowers were in full bloom I just drooled when I topped Maple Pass. There was a little tarn up there, we had lunch there Your report brought back a nice memory!

Is "R" something you have on a leash?

Allison, Heather pass looks to be a great suggestion for enjoying a view of N Cascades color. I do have two concerns with Heather Pass, one being the difficulty in camping areas. A hiking guide said no camping near Lake Ann or Heather pass. Is this true ? Also happened to see a local community paper suggesting Lake Ann as a timely hike for the same reason I'm considering it. The local rabble may follow me to paradise ! A good substitute may be Cutthroat Pass ? Wadda think ?
A cc.com get together seems like a scary thought, just in time for halloween. Those spray lords shouldn't be taken lightly. You might want to bring nwhiker.net'ers as reinforcements !

According to the guide there are camps at one ot the lakes west of Heather Pass. There is a trail form the pass to the lakes.
I think Cutthroat would make an excelleent sub, or maybe those Blue Lakes.
I've climbed and drank with the crew at cc.com for almost a year, and with just a couple of exceptions, they are a good lot, and a ton of fun. Why do you think I still post there even after the thrashing I've gotten? That's like 5 people and their multiple screen names, nothing more.

Thanks for the info, Allison. Given some reasonable weather, I'll be there.
