Wasn't feeling all that ambitious on Sunday, but still needed to get out. Weather didn't look great for the mountains so the coast it was. And with Salt Creek being only 2 hours from our house, it was an easy decision. Last September there was a grey whale hanging out in Crescent Bay. No such luck today. Just a sea lion and some harlequin ducks (and other birds) and beautiful, albeit cloud-subdued scenery. After a quick lunch, I headed up the WW2 Bunker Trail. A great place to hide, but not so much if you wanted to pummel enemy ships. Unless, just maybe, the alder trees weren't there some 70+ years ago. The west gun placement did have a view, however. After the bunkers I walked the road down to the trail that goes up to some peak that I'm too lazy to look up right now. Makes a big 5-6 mile loop. I took the left one that heads down by the water first, suspecting that I wouldn't have the motivation or time to do the loop. It was a good choice. The trail lead to a spur trail a mile from the trailhead that lead to The Cove. A nice, quiet little spot until a young family came down. Then it was just nice. Passed a waterfall on the way. Also saw a pair of otters.

After I got home, I was greeted by a nice view over Hood Canal when I took the garbage down to the street.

I camped there in October. I did not go up the hill because it was in the fog, but wandered around the bunker trail and the other one. I also explored Port Angeles. Since I live out in the sticks--can't see my neighbors when the trees have leaves, I enjoy exploring towns. I'd like to return--they jacked up the camping price $5, I think.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

One nice feature of Salt Creek is that it's a county park so the NW Forest Pass is not required. treeswarper, let me know next time you're in the area, I'll buy the coffee and point out some local nostalgia.

I'd love to have seen the whole facility under the berm in operation, must have been quite a place. Did you happen to find the slit bunker down in the campground? They would have had quite a view of the shore.

At low tide you can walk out to the island and most days this area is full of seals.

Great composition, I love this spot on the bluff trail. Salt Creek is one of my favorite parks.

Thanks Trestle! I had my lunch on the bench right next to the slit bunker. Hard to get tired of that place. Especially when the tide is out. Can't believe it's only 2 hrs away. Manyof the same features as further west on the shore, but a couple hours closer.

Great place, but next time you should try to catch it at low tide. Awesome tide pools there.
