The snow is melting. Here is a link to the snow cams at White Pass, which is in the vicinity kind of. The first is at about 6000 feet elevation and the lower is at the pass level, 4500 feet. White Pass pics Another source of info is here. white pass shopper Note that this weekend is the mob scene at Packwood and it could take some time to drive through the mess. The flea market is on.

Treeswarper, Thank you, those cameras are a real asset. Two years ago, it took me and a fellow backpacker an hour and fourty five minutes to drive through Packwood on our way to highway 410. As you probably know, it normally takes 2 to 3 minutes. Lots and lots of people, and they all seem to want to cross the street.....................

We're shooting for around the week of June 20thish to plant Cramer Lake, pretty normal timing. Usually the trip up to Dumbell is still pretty snow covered at that time. Supposed to warm up again by Friday and be hot through the next week which will accelerate snowmelt.

The snotel nearest Indian Heaven shows that with this heat wave, the snow depth dipped below 100 inches and is now down to 88". That snotel is about the same altitude as Thomas Lake, though on the opposite side. So a long ways to go for IH.

I went to Packwood today to play some music with friends. It took an hour and ten minutes (I timed it) to go the last three miles.

I assume that was just getting (to) Packwood, not thru to the other side; east of Packwood.

Looks like WTA will be at the Soda Springs trailhead as well so I have to assume Lewis County BCHW will be providing pack support rather than doing trail work. And what is it with Packwood these days? Why so congested? Don't go that way unless I am going over White Pass.

Chico, Thanks for the update. Packwood has an annual street vendors weekend, (that's not the correct name) but there are about a gazillion people. There are dozens upon dozens of vendors booths, and it's like a huge Saturday market that takes place each Memorial weekend. It will take you about 2 hours or more to drive from one end of town to the other. Two hours if you are lucky. Unless you are going for the event, you absolutely do not want to be traveling highway 12 East during this event. Any other weekend, no problem.

That was to the turn off in downtown Packwood where my friends live. Chico, every Memorial Day weekend and every Labor Day weekend, Packwood has a huge flea market. There are also many yard sales along the way and Randle has a small flea market at their fire dept. If the weather is good, and it was, hordes of people come up and wander around looking for a piece of junk that they need. Some of the townspeople, fire dept., school organizations make money charging for parking. It is a mob scene and when the ambulance or cops have an emergency up or down the highway, they have a hard time getting through. Saturday and Sunday are the worst days for congestion. I also heard that folks were parked anywhere they could get a car kind of off the road and set up a tent along Skate Cr. What with snow levels and washed out roads, camping spots are limited. Here are some pictures from the past and taken early on a Friday morning before the mob arrived. Just imagine an almost solid mob of people along the roadsides and bumper to bumper traffic creeping through.
