I am having difficulty finding information about this supposed "#644 junction" shortcut trail at mile 2229 on the halfmile PCT notes. Wondering if anyone can give me some info.
Would this be knifes edge going over Old Snowy??? Uh, Trail #644 is Mt. Pugh... no where close to the PCT and WAAAAY up north far from Section H of the PCT.
Guthook does not show any trail junction at 2229. The nearest trails are much lower numbers so wondering if someone transposed some digits..
Riley is at 2236.8 sort of close
There is a connecting trail from Riley Camp to the PCT not shown in TOPO but is on CalTopo map builder. If you take the trail from the PCT to Riley Camp and then down toward the trail head on Road 23 there is also a new trail not shown on any map that goes south from Sled camp area to the PCT, where it comes out on the 23 road (FS-521Rd). I think this is called the Riley cutoff trail. It looked to be used by Horses.
Yes, 64A. Riley cutoff trail between Riley tr and PCT was refurbished and (re)made a formal trail a few years ago. Gifford Pinchot NF put out a new wilderness map last year and it is on that. About 2 miles long, gains a few hundred feet from either end to the middle. It makes for a decent loop of the two trails if that's what you want - once it all melts out (probably late July this year). It is only signed on the Riley Trail end and is easy to miss on the PCT side, so keep that in mind when choosing the direction if you are doing a loop.
PS - 64A goes from near Sled Camp, not Riley (Meadow) Camp. Sled Camp was an old shepherds camp from ages ago. Don't think anybody camps there any more.
