I went through my Freeze Dried food for my upcoming Winds trip. I noticed that the expiration date was 3 years ago on most of them. Didn't know I collected that food that long ago! Is the food still good? I thought that Freeze Dried food kept for many years? confused.gif It has been stored inside, not in a garage.

Open the oldest one up. Smell it, Prepare it, taste it, eat it, digest it, etc. At each step if you find anything questionable, get new food. Its a big trip, you don't want to have a lousy experience, because you skimped on food.

Even if you decide it is still good from checking one, I wouldn't be inclined to go on a long multi-day trip only with old food. I think it's supposed to be good for 5 years. But maybe it sat on a shelf in a store before you bought it. Moral of the story: go backpacking more often!

Most survival freeze dried food I ever saw had a shelf life of 20 years. I think it is packaged vacuum sealed so no moisture can get to it, also the freeze process removes moisture so I would think the food is still good. Your choice!

Just checked the box of MH freeze dry from the family's last Costco expedition: "Best by Jan 2047." If I don't eat it, I can will it to the next generation.

Recently went to a Cascadia Subduction event presentation and they said freeze dried has shelf life of five years. I then went to a prepper place in town and they said five years too.

Thanks to all. Will make 1 of them. I bought them all from Campmor so they have a pretty fast turn around. I have an extra Kung Pau Chicken. I'll try that one. If that stays down, then everything else would be fine!! lol.gif lol.gif
