On bare skin you can gently and steadily pull them out and crush them. However, my least fun solo hike involved Bead Lake, north of Spokane, and a number of embedded ticks in my neck, at the hairline. Very hard to remove by myself and totally disgusting. I had gathered dry firewood from the sunny side of the lake.... Yuck. Also got a tick bite on the Ross Lake trail a few years back.

We discovered quite a tick infestation on the lower slopes of Dirtyface Peak yesterday. My hiking partner, who didn't wear peppermint oil like I did, probably picked off 20 of them traveling through the brushy areas. None above 5,000 feet where there was still several feet of snow, but back at the trailhead, one giant one crawled up my back. hairy.gif

The Teanaway Community Forest near Cle Elum (Indian Creek) is infested with ticks right now. They love all the greenery and moisture.

Never had a problem up there. But, they seem to be showing up in areas where they weren't common before...

My wife picked up two ticks on Easton Ridge Saturday. She only found them back home, indoors, one on the floor, one on a door.

We were going through the woods and once again we gave the ticks an easy target still none this year surprisingly, and no mosquito's but I fear we will pay for this.

I had read that the Chelan Lakeshore trail was ticky this year, but I just did the hike May 22-23, kept watching my legs the whole time, and never saw a single tick.

My wife and I hiked about 4 miles just outside Mazama this weekend, even pushing through brush for a little while, and no signs of ticks. We also camped at Klipchuck off Hwy 20 and there were absolutely no bugs. That's saying something, as my wife is a mosquito magnet. With the wet winter and recent snowmelt, maybe we hit the calm before the insect storm?

I hadn't come across Picaridan before. Thanks for mentioning it. I'm wondering if some home mixed Deet/Picaridan might be the best available skin repellent. I've sprayed all my normal hiking clothes with Permethin, which seems to work well. (no ticks).
