How would I go about compressing an image to the required size for an avatar?

Open the file with Windows "Paint". Click "resize" at top. You may have to play around with it to get it to fit.
Be sure to save a copy of the original image file prior to fiddling around with it.

From your settings - "Displays a small graphic image below your details in posts. Only one image can be displayed at a time, its width can be no greater than 150 pixels, the height no greater than 150 pixels, and the file size no more than 16 KB."

This assumes the person is running Windows. Some us choose not too.

I recall making mine. Height and width were easy enough. File size took some work as I recall. I'd resize and check the file size. Not small enough. Downgrade the quality or dpi. Check file size again. Have Photoshop and another darn good shareware application. Could use Lightroom if I wanted but more familiar with Photoshop at this point.

Now also have Windows 10 on the other half of the partitioned hard drive but only so I can run GIS. Was "forced" to use Windows when I had a paying job. Now I get to do what I want when I want to and the way I want to.
