So...when you backpack and spend a few days at camp, do you bring a light daypack along? If so, what kind of light backpack do you bring those side trips from camp?

I just use the backpack as a daypack. But for 1-2 hour excursions, I wear a small waist pack (camera, map) & sometimes carry a bag (water, dinner).

I've brought my REI flash 22 on trips when I know I'll be camping somewhere, but doing lengthy day trips yet going back to the same camp site at night. It's only a pound and rolls up really tight. It sure beats carrying my overnight back on these longer excursions.

The REI Flash 18 and 22 + the Marmot Kompressor 18 and 20 are essentially stuff sacks with shoulder straps (and maybe a waist band). They are great for multi-day trips with side hikes that are more than a stroll from camp. You can use them as sleeping bag stuff sacks -- at least if you don't care about maximal compression of the sleeping bag.

My backpacks are all light enough now so I use them as day packs I like theHMG 2400.

I also bring along a Flash 18. It's actually not a bad little day pack, with a pocket for a water bladder, and even a sternum strap. In my pack, I use it as a sleeping bag stuff sack.

I like the Marmot Kompressor. Lightweight, but enough of a strap system to be comfortable. I use a sit pad inside for a "frame"

I just use my normal backpack (Exos 48), I never seen the need to carry an extra pound of daypack around on multi-days. I've been using my kids discarded school backpacks for day hikes. I really like some of these suggestions. I'll have to try on a few of these for size next time I'm in REI. Any preferences from the taller day hikers?

I"m 6' and for day hikes I use osprey talon 22. i carry my first aid and emergency kit/camera everywhere i go so the super light ones don't work. I have a couple gossamer gear pouches i hang on chest straps for small camera, gps, or bug juice/sunscreen. its got hydration sleeve and waist belt pockets and mesh pockets on both sides for water bottles if ya need to carry extra. if you are looking for a trail running one i'd say osprey synchro 10 or 15 is worth look. BTW...exos 48 is my thru hike pack too. wouldn't mind trying the 2400 SOUTHWEST mentioned above tho.

I came across a daypack recently that would be perfect to bring along for day trips while backpacking. Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Daypack. Great reviews (read the REI reviews, some useful tips like how to attach a hydration bladder), packs down to nothing, and only weighs 2.4oz. Looks promising. Fwiw, I'm 6'3" and have been happy with my Flash 22 as my everyday summer daypack for the last three years. Comfy enough for me.
