Summer has descended on Chelan County! cool.gif After a chilly spring and lots of winter snows, it appears we have arrived to heat. Last weekend, Middle E (Barr) and I attempted to do Devils Backbone from the Entiat River side via Shady Pass Road. Although the Forest Service had said that the Road was open, when we got there Sat. morning, there was a big ol' "Road Closed" sign with the gate also closed. We searched and searched up and down the Entiat River Rd. for a Forest Service person to no avail, so we settled on heading out on the other side of the Entiat River via Middle Tommy - - - - Nope. No bridge across the raging creek. We retreated to the South Tommy leg of our proposed loop and fortunately, there was a bridge. But we also hit solid snow at 6k and were not prepared to continue to our intended Signal and Cougar mountains. So we camped at the high spot at 6500' - with a lovely dousing of snow and sleet during the night and vowed to return to Shady Pass Rd. the next weekend (BTW, it was open on Sunday when we headed out) So, the Schmidt-altitudes (Babe and Dude) bravely agreed to join us on our folly to hike from the Shady Pass Rd. up Lake Creek Trail #1443/1444 to Angle Peak where we would drop packs, set up camp and then hoof it over to Devils Backbone (another 3 miles roundtrip and about 500' loss/500' gain to the Backbone viewpoint). Saw one other couple hiking and about four motor-bikers from the Forest Service who were doing some logging out on trails (but not on any of the ones we were on!!! shakehead.gif waah.gif ) On our way, we had to cross Lake Creek about eight times - the first two times, we diligently took off our boots and put on camp shoes to cross . . . that got old real fast and we just did our best to keep our feet as dry as possible after that. At about 5800' we hit fairly consistent snow (except where there were sun patches in the forest). Cooper didn't mind either the creek crossings or the snow - plenty of water and cool for him. Had a nice dinner and an incredibly mild evening (didn't even put the rain fly on) = great star show - but didn't see the Northern Lights like David did up by Mt. Baker. Lovely morning . . warmed quickly. We got ourselves together and on the trail by 8 (even though all of us had been awake before sunrise!) To complete our loop, we went out the Four Mile Ridge trail #1445 and decided to tag our high point for the hike about three miles from camp @ 7128'. Fun little scramble - but decided not to tempt fate but heading over the summit and back down to the trail at a saddle - we just retraced our steps. Uneventful the rest of the way out, but there was a lot of blow-down and it was getting very warm. Back to the car by Noon. Stats: Gain: Maybe 4600' Distance: 19+ miles There's still a fair amount of snow on the higher peaks, but it's supposed to stay warm over here, so it could melt quickly.

There is some good beta on the Shady Pass area in this TR. up.gif I almost planned a trip out of the Big Hill TH last week but had a sneaky suspicion about the status of Shady Pass area even if it was open at the bottom. Thanks for the confirmation.

I tried to drive to Big Hill TH on Saturday but a small patch of snow right before the parking lot made it sketchy, though it could probably be shoveled out fairly easily. There is ample snow free parking just beyond the snow patch. Ended up backing up for half a mile to turn around.
