I may just be bad at searching. But i'm trying to find the best form for a summit register. I'm heading up to Gunn soon and it appears that there might not be a register up there. Also I hike Stickney frequently, and there isn't one there. What is the best (and lightest, most compact to carry) type of summit resgister. PVC? bulky ammo can? What should i bring? Is there a type of pen that i should leave?

Recommend leaving a pen and pencil (maybe with small pencil sharpener too). The PVC ones seem to work OK, but a rubber gasket might be helpful to keep the moisture out. Double plastic bags around the notebook would probably be helpful too.

I tried to place a geocache on Baring but it wasn't approved. Next year I went back and saw no register so I took the geocache stuff out and left a pen and a logbook. It's been three years since I've been up so I don't know if it survived.

I only put up registers on Middle Fork peaks and I chose the pint size Nalgene bottles. The small Rite-In-The-Rain notebooks fit inside with a slight bend. At $9/bottle + $2/notebook it's not super economical, but I only bring them to peaks around the Middle Fork. I put the notebook in the bottle inside a heavy duty baggie along with 2 golf pencils. Pencils can be sharpened, but avoid ones with erasers -- the metal attachment rusts. I don't know if these hold up but I'll find out in 5-10 years when I revisit some of the summits where I placed them. The bottles are water tight, but condensation can be quite invasive with big temperature swings.

Yah the one I left on Baring was a lock and lock container with a spiral notebook and a pen and pencil in a bag. After a year of being up there I saw no moisture. They're a pretty commonly used geocache container. The flaps probably will get brittle and break. Nalgene is definitely a better idea.

Disagree! For me, finding a register with known names especially on obscure peaks is the icing on the cake.

every pill bottle (like ibuprofen) i've seen has been awesome. nalgenes are fine too, but i wouldn't buy new unless you're rich. i'm sure any goodwill or thrift store has a few hundred of them.
