Note: This is an infrared map. First one in some time! New fire perimeter map today. So far dead calm today here and nasty smoke has settled into the valleys. Using a respirator mask to work and walk. :-( Good news is they have a hand line on Pat Cr ridge and will inprove it today.

Could you have been seeing Many Trails Peak? There was active burning there yesterday.
I don't think so... I loaded up Google Earth and lined everything up.. just checked it again, I'm pretty sure it's Dollar Watch.

Just looked at the modis maps and all kinds of heat west of Dollar Watch west almost to the Hidden Lakes and south to Many Trails Peak. Looking up river there is a masssive smoke cloud in that entire area. Nothing new seen on the SW part of the map/fire.

Big smoke plume looking up the Lost River about 6:30 PM. That NW corner of the fire has blown up big time this afternoon. :-(

From last night on InciWeb. Things of note: 55% contained, the fuel is REALLY dry, up to 30,922 acres and getting cooler and windy this afternoon. "Current Situation Total Personnel 317 Size 30,922 Acres Percent of Perimeter Contained 55% Estimated Containment Date Sunday October 15th, 2017 approx. 12:00 AM Fuels Involved Timber stands consist of a mix of Fire, Spruce, and Pine. Heavy dead and down fuels are very receptive to spotting due to critically dry fuel moistures. 1000 hour fuel moisture at First butte RAWS is 6% which is the record low for that RAWS. Significant Events Active fire behavior today mostly within unburned interior islands due to unstable atmosphere, high temperature, breezy afternoon, winds, and low relative humidity in conjunction with critically dry fuels and steep topography. Outlook Planned Actions Continue close contact and coordination with Canada in regards to the northern part of the fire. Use aviation resources, as available, to keep the fire in check on the Pat Creek Ridge, and the Lost River drainage.Chippers will be deployed along roads to aid in fuels reduction and begin rehab work. IHC continues direct line construction on Pat Creek Ridge. They will be constructing and securing direct line for one more operational period. Projected Incident Activity The fire will continue to burn actively within unburned interior fuels Perimeter growth will be possible in some areas until the fire burns into natural barriers or burn scars (Upper Drake area on the east side of the fire). Predicted west winds should not favor significant growth on the northwest perimeter ( Deception Pass and Many Trails Peak vicinity) but the fire will continue to back in that direction through available fuels. Current Weather Weather Concerns Poor relative humidity recoveries are again expected on Wednesday morning. Then a cold front will cross the fire later Wednesday. It will bring ridge top wind gusts around 20 mph in the afternoon. About 5 degrees of day -over- day cooling is expected, but there will be little to no corresponding rise in relative humidity." Also a couple of photos on Diamond Cr Fire FB page-before and after of hot shot crew work above Pat Creek. https://www.facebook.com/diamondcreekfire2017

New update posted right after my last post. About all that is new is this. I guess we are one of the “few parts”. ;-) "A smoke column was visible on Tuesday in a few parts of the fire area. Contributing to the column were high temperatures, low humidity and unstable air. Also on Tuesday, firefighters secured a containment line along the ridge above Pat Creek. While the possibility of fire spreading in the Pat Creek drainage is low, the area will continue to be monitored by air."

New IR map this AM. Very interesting change in the fire perimeter. For a week or so there has been a dip in the perimeter line ALL THE WAY ACROSS PAT CREEK NEAR THE LOST RIVER. This new map now shows the perimeter in that area well north/above Pat Creek. Obviously, both of these cannot be correct.

I am sure hoping this new map is correct as the fire being on the south side of Pat Cr is worrisome in regard to the fire spreading south (toward us). ;-)

Substantial downsizing if the fire crews and management. They must think it’s under control. New IR map and again the fire has NOT crossed Pat Creek as they were saying for some time. :-)

Only real growth appears to be near Cougar Lake and Hidden Lakes as well as the far eastern edge of the fire. Looks very hopeful! Hope the wind today does not kick up anything major but blowing to the east at any rate. From InciWeb: "Thursday, August 24, 2017 Southwest Area Type 2 Incident Management Team 5 Incident Statistics Size: 31,559 acres (32,039 on IR map calculation) Completed: 55% (or 59% on another page) Structures damaged: Structures destroyed: 1 2 Injuries: 1 Date detected: July 23, 2017 Cause: Human Estimated cost $7.4 million Resources Hand Crews: 5 Camp Crews: 2 Engines: 8 Helicopters: 2 Masticator: 1 Water tenders: 4 Chippers 1 Total Personnel: 228 Fire Information: (503) 765-5724, 8 am – 8 pm Email: diamondcreekfire@gmail Website: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5409/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DiamondCreekFire2017 Smoke Conditions: http://wasmoke.blogspot.com Location: Methow Valley Ranger District on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest; 12 miles north of Mazama, WA. Summary: Effective at 7 a.m. on Friday, August 25, management of the Diamond Creek Fire will be transferred from the Southwest Area Type 2 Incident Management Team 5 to the Methow Valley Ranger District. The Southwest Area Type 2 Incident Management Team 5 assumed control of the fire on August 15. “Our priority from the first day has been to keep firefighters safe, while protecting forest and private assets,” said Mark Bernal, incident commander trainee. “We realize that a wildfire has a huge impact on a community. We thank you for your support,” he said. Firefighter and public safety has been the priority. In many areas of the Pasayten Wilderness, steep, rugged terrain limited access. Aviation and ground resources were utilized only where and when it was effective and safe to do so. The strategy was to prepare lines that kept the fire within defined boundaries. Chipping operations continue to remove debris accumulated during the construction of indirect lines."

Just when I thought things were looking up! ;-) Some of you know I move between Houston, TX and Mazama, WA. Saturday our home in Houston flooded. So far 29+ inches of rain and still coming. I need to return to deal with insurance, contractors etc. The good news is the fire seems to be fairly well under control and I have the place as fire ready as it can get. James Taylor and I now have a common theme song.

Crazy what's going on down in Houston. If only they could send a couple inches of that rain this way. Sorry to hear you have to deal with that BL.

Good grief! This is a rough few weeks for you. Hard to imagine handling two major separately located crises. Best of luck down there. ~z

Fire has grown considerably on the north-northwest side resulting in the closure of a portion of the Boundary Trail. Following is an updated list of trail closures: Trails Closed - •FS trail 511 - Goat Creek •FS trail 518 - Falls Creek •FS trail 519 - Copper Glance •FS trail 523 - Eightmile Ridge •FS trail 477 – Ptarmigan Creek beyond the Dot Creek crossing •FS trail 500 – Lake Creek beyond Black Lake •FS trail 502 – Sand Ridge •FS trail 533 – Boundary Trail, between Spanish Camp (junction with Andrews Creek #504) and the Pasayten Airstrip (junction with trail #478) Summary: On Monday the fire grew substantially at the north end in East Fork Pasayten Creek into Whistler Basin and around Deception Pass, bringing more smoke into the upper Methow Valley. The Diamond Creek Fire Incident Commander is coordinating with the British Columbia Ministry of Forest Land and Natural Resource Operations, which is doing additional reconnaissance flights in the area. Helicopter water drops are still being used to hold the fire in Drake Creek and keep it from moving into Pat Creek. Chippers are continuing to treat slash created as part of the preparation work on the indirect fire line along Ortell Creek and Deer Creek Roads. A road grader and three water tenders have repaired the Goat Creek Road past Spokane Gulch, and will continue to work toward Goat Peak Lookout trailhead during the next few days. Fire behavior on Tuesday will be very active, with continued movement to the north and burning of interior islands. Smoke will continue to affect air quality in the upper Methow Valley.
