It looks like they are ready for a show on the Upper Wallace Mainline between the Upper Falls and Wallace Lake out side the State Park. No activity yesterday but sign at Upper Falls and pink ribbon on trees above. Should open up some good views for a few years.

Monday March 27, 2017 10:30 PDT Olympic National Park News Release Contract Awarded for Lake Crescent Highway Rehab Project; Construction to Begin in Late April The contract for rehabilitation of 12 miles of the Lake Crescent section of Highway 101 and four miles of East Beach Road has been awarded to Strider Construction Company, Inc. of Bellingham, Washington. The $27.5 million-project will address long-term safety and maintenance concerns along the two roads. The project will improve subsurface pavement conditions, apply new pavement, stabilize slopes, repair retaining walls, improve drainage, replace failing culverts, replace guardrails, mitigate rockfall hazards and improve intersections. The project will also improve the Sledgehammer Point overlook, including construction of accessible pedestrian paths, curbing, exhibit, seat walls and new park entrance sign. A transit stop will be constructed in the Barnes Point area in cooperation with Clallam Transit. “We are very pleased to move forward with our Federal Highway Administration partners on this important project,” said Sarah Creachbaum, Superintendent of Olympic National Park. “Now that the contract has been awarded, the contractor will begin developing detailed construction plans and assembling materials and equipment for construction to start late next month.” Construction is slated to begin in late April this year and will take place over three construction seasons. The project is being managed collaboratively by the the Federal Highway Administration and the National Park Service. The construction schedule will vary throughout the season to reduce impacts to the public while still allowing safe and efficient road work. Work will occur on weekdays only and will not be scheduled on holidays or weekends. An outline of the yearly schedule for Highway 101 is provided below. April—Late May · Half‐hour delays during work hours, with short delays afterhours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic. · Limited 4‐hour delays may be scheduled (from 9:00am – 1:00pm only) and must be announced two weeks in advance. Memorial Day—Labor Day (summer season) · Half‐hour delays during work hours, with short delays afterhours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic. Early September— Mid November · Half‐hour delays during work hours, with short delays afterhours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic. · Limited 4‐hour delays (from 9:00am – 1:00pm only) and 6‐hour overnight delays (10:00pm – 4:00am only) may be scheduled and must be announced two weeks in advance. Mid November—February · No construction anticipated March (2018 and 2019 only) · Half‐hour delays during work hours, with short delays afterhours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic. · Limited 4‐hour delays and 6‐hour overnight delays may be scheduled and will be announced two weeks in advance. The annual construction schedule, Frequently Asked Questions and additional information are available on the Olympic National Park website at https://www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/lake-crescent-highway-101-rehabilitation-2017-19.htm. No more than 20 four‐hour delays are permitted each spring and each fall. Four‐hour delays may only be implemented between Labor Day and Memorial Day and only between the hours of 9:00am and 1:00pm. Emergency vehicles will have access without delay at all times. Overnight delays lasting up to six hours are permitted between Labor Day and March 31. All six‐hour delays may occur only from 10:00pm—4:00am and may only occur on Mondays through Wednesday. Emergency vehicles will have access without delay at all times. All four‐hour and six‐hour overnight delays must be scheduled and announced two weeks in advance. Notices will be sent to area media outlets, widely distributed via the Washington State Department of Transportation traffic alert webpage (https://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/trafficalerts/ ) and posted on the Olympic National Park website (https://www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/conditions.htm) Work on East Beach Road will be completed during the first construction season and will only occur on weekdays. Most of the work on East Beach Road will occur before June 1 and after Labor Day, with most of the travel impacts outside of the summer months. However, sometime between August 1 and October 21, 2017, the road will close to through traffic for a maximum two-week period for contractors to replace a culvert. This closure will be scheduled and announced in advance. East Beach Road was built between 1911 and 1925 and provides access to private residences, Log Cabin Resort and several popular day use areas and links Highway 101 and Highway 112 and as a bypass route around the lake. In 2015, approximately 67,600 vehicles used East Beach Road. The road along Lake Crescent’s south shore was built in the early 1920s, replacing ferry passage across the lake. Today the road is part of U.S. Highway 101 and remains a vital transportation link and popular sightseeing route for visitors to the Lake Crescent area and the Olympic Peninsula. In 2015, over 420,000 vehicles traveled this road. More information about the project and the contract can be found online at the FedBizOpps website: https://www.fbo.gov/spg/DOT/FHWA/WFL/DTFH7017B00002/listing.html www.nps.gov

There was very outdated information under the Naches Ranger District Roads, so I updated it.

Have I offended you today?

Friday, April 28, 2017 13:13 PDT Olympic National Park News Release Pavement Improvement Planned for Park Roads Olympic National Park and Federal Highway Administration staff are working together to repair and improve pavement on roads, parking lots and campgrounds in the western sections of Olympic National Park. The eastern half of the park was completed in 2016. Intermountain Slurry Seal, Inc. of Reno, Nevada was awarded a $3.3 million contract by the Federal Highway Administration to complete the project, which will extend the life of asphalt pavement in the Quinault, Kalaloch, Hoh and Mora areas. The project will be completed in phases and will occur on weekdays only, with the entire project completed by August 18, 2017. The project includes crack sealing and cleaning, pavement patching, microsurfacing, and new pavement markings and signs. The work will begin next week in the North Shore Quinault area. Roads will be reduced to one travel lane while the contractor is working and flaggers and pilot cars will be onsite to assist with traffic. Delays of up to 15 minutes should be expected. “We apologize for the short-term inconvenience caused by this project, but look forward to an improved driving experience for park visitors,” said Olympic National Park Acting Superintendent Lee Taylor. “We ask for patience as we complete this project.” A timeline of work scheduled for the first three weeks of the project is outlined below: May 1 through May 5 – pavement patching along the Quinault North Shore Road, July Creek Picnic Area Parking, and the Quinault Ranger Station. May 8 through May 12 – continuation of pavement patching and beginning of crack sealing and cleaning along the Quinault North Shore Road, July Creek Picnic Area Parking, and the Quinault Ranger Station. May 15 through May 19 – pavement patching, crack sealing, and cleaning at the Kalaloch Information Station, the Utility and Residence Road, and the Kalaloch Campground. For current road and travel information, visitors should consult the park website at www.nps.gov/olym or call the recorded Road and Weather Hotline at 360-565-3131. --NPS--

Wednesday, May 10, 2017 17:11 PDT Olympic National Park News Release Work on Boulder Creek Trail to Begin Monday; No Access on Olympic Hot Springs Road Above Glines Canyon Overlook Beginning Monday, Olympic National Park crews will start work on Boulder Creek Trail which begins at the end of the Olympic Hot Springs Road in the Elwha Valley. This project involves the use of heavy equipment for the demolition and removal of the Crystal Creek bridge and installation of an alternate route and creek crossing at that location. For visitor and employee safety, there will be no access above the Glines Canyon Overlook on Olympic Hot Springs Road beginning Monday, May 15, until later this summer. “Crews will be working as quickly as possible to complete the necessary bridge removal and reopen the area to visitors” said Olympic National Park Acting Superintendent Lee Taylor. “As much as we regret the inconvenience, this project will ultimately restore safe access on Boulder Creek Trail for hikers and stock use.” Damage caused by a rockfall event in the winter of 2014-2015 led to the closure of the Crystal Creek bridge. Since then, further erosion has led to increased destabilization. Inspection by Federal Highways geotechnical and structural engineers last June determined the bridge was unsafe for pedestrian and stock use. The Olympic Hot Springs Road will remain open up to the Glines Canyon Spillway Overlook for the duration of the project. Whiskey Bend Road is open all the way to the trailhead. For current road and travel information, visitors should consult the park website at www.nps.gov/olym or call the recorded Road and Weather Hotline at 360-565-3131. --NPS--

Monday, May 15, 2017 11:46 PDT Olympic National Park News Release Flood Damage Repair on Mora Road to Begin Wednesday, May 17 Flood damage repair work on Mora Road will begin this Wednesday and last for up to six weeks. This project will restore the flood-damaged road to two lanes and address additional slope instabilities. Due to the nature of the road repair there will be no access to Rialto Beach until the completion of the road work with the exception of Memorial Day weekend. This includes backcountry trips through the North Coast Wilderness beginning and ending at Rialto Beach. Rialto Beach will be accessible to visitors and hikers over Memorial Day weekend starting Friday, May 26, at 5pm through Monday, May 29, at 5pm. The Mora Campground will remain open throughout the project. Access is restricted to the work site for visitor and worker safety. Heavy equipment will be positioned on the roadway to drill soil nails into the road bank and a boom will extend out over the side to complete the work. The soil nails and facing reinforcement will extend approximately 8 to 10 feet down the existing bank from the road shoulder. The soil nails will be embedded up to 20 feet horizontally into the bank. The reinforcement system also includes high-strength galvanized mesh and structural shotcrete (concrete sprayed at high velocity using a hose). In addition to the necessary work to reinforce the road and repair the pavement and current slope failures, this project will also proactively stabilize adjacent sections along the river side of the Mora Road which are currently showing signs of instability. This preemptive work will help protect against future issues. Overall, this project is crucial for continued long-term access to Rialto Beach. Mora Road was reduced to one lane after winter storm flooding in 2015-2016 caused a major wash-out. The road slumped and continued monitoring of the pavement cracks indicates ongoing downward movement of the road sub grade. Geotechnical engineers determined the road could not support vehicle loads safely. Further erosion has led to increased undermining of the road bed. For current road and travel information, visitors should consult the park website at www.nps.gov/olym or call the recorded Road and Weather Hotline at 360-565-3131. For questions about backcountry permits contact the Wilderness Information Center in Port Angeles at 360-565-3100. --NPS--

Made it to Slide Lake trailhead in a 2001 Subaru Forester on Illabot Creek Road yesterday. Below are pics. Washout at 10.3 was no big deal for now but could get ugly in future. Sides of road are brushy so visibility distance is limited. Thank God it's open.

During this four-hour period, Highway 101 eastbound will be open to the turn for Barnes Point where Lake Crescent Lodge, Storm King Information Station, NatureBridge, and the trailheads are located. Highway 101 westbound will be closed near mile marker 229 where the current rock scaling operation is underway. Travelers should plan ahead to drive through the construction zone before 9:00 am or wait until after 1:00 pm. Limited four-hour delays can occur Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm beginning after Labor Day. These four-hour delays will be announced at least 2 weeks in advance. After work hours and on weekends expect short delays for alternating single-lane traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals. East Beach Road was built between 1911 and 1925 and provides access to private residences, Log Cabin Resort and several popular day use areas. East Beach Road links Highway 101 and Highway 112 and serves as a bypass route around the lake. In 2015, over 420,000 vehicles traveled this road. www.nps.gov
