I've been planning a backpacking trip on the timberline trail around Mt hood and 3 weeks before my trip I dislocated my shoulder - its an old injury that I had had surgically repaired 8 years ago and had no issues with again until now. I had an MRI and have two partially torn ligaments aka sprains and a chip in the head of my humerus. Does anyone have any prior experience with this type on injury? My MD said I'm not in any immediate danger of it dislocating again and if I limit my movement and its up to me to make the go/don't go decision. I greatly appreciate any advise/experience that anyone has had with anything like this, thank you!

My left shoulder has been out three times. Never had surgery. For me, once a backpack is on, no problem. However range of motion and strength issues on the injured side can make putting on the backpack tricky. After the 3rd immobilization period was over a friend of mine who had just gotten his acupuncture license offered me a free treatment. Not wanting to be rude, I accepted. Much to my surprise my range of motion improved dramatically and I was able to lift my arm over my head again, instead to just to chest height. YMMV.
