In a trip report posted at trip report by user Eeyore a photo of obvious rock stacking was included. photo of rock stacking on the PCT Cairns (the real thing) would not be and should not be this close. And not so "intricate". My gut reaction to seeing this would be to immediately get to work and disperse all the rocks on both! Cairns have their place out there in the wilds but rock stacking? Nope! I've seen photos of smaller ones in other locations in wilderness areas. Sad!

The large one has been there around at least 6 years. Probably way longer. It gets knocked down once in a while but put right back up. This is the first year I've seen the small one. It was partially knocked over last weekend.

Not to defend it, but is this some sort of winter route marker or just the result of people making their mark on the landscape? Perhaps a discretely placed game cam at the site and at the trailhead with some hefty fines if positive ID can be had.

Pretty sure the ones in the trip report are route markers.

Guess it's a question for the PCTA then.

Am I missing something here? It seems to me the trail is easy to see. Rumi

Winter route markers? Unless the snow gets too deep. Otherwise, entirely unnecessary.

I have rarely seen route markers like that. The only ones I have ever seen like that were in Colorado along the Continental divide. In those cases there were no trees at all. I have never seen anything like that in Washington. It is difficult to gauge from the photo if they are actually needed. Places where they are really needed are like when a trail reenters the trees from above treeline. And yes, if there is deep snow that doesn't get scoured off from the wind, then there are useless anyway. Rumi

maybe they were somebody's idea of Inuksuk whatever the motive, it's pretty obvious somebody had way too much time on their hands.

Email sent to PCTA for comment. The LNT.org folks would say "tear em down"!
