I have a sister who lives in Land O Lakes, so naturally I have been watching this hurricane closely. She says they haven't been ordered to evacuate & in fact have been told to stay put unless there's a mandatory evac. So, they're riding it out @ home while the power goes off & on & trees get "whipped around pretty good". eek.gif paranoid.gif Thanks for all the above links, btw. up.gif

Post-Irma, I feel exonerated(mostly with my close family members) by two articles in Seattle Times Tu. 9-12: 1. Live reporters in the Mandatory Evac. zones telling us how bad it's gonna be. What a slap in the face to those emergency personnel and 1st responders who may have been lucky with Irma but the next time...???? 2. As soon as Irma skirted the southern tip of FL peninsula, the impact of the counterclockwise spin of the "right hook" was reduced. If she would have drifted north, along the Atlantic side, we would have seen a different picture. Tom

According to a CNN article on Irma's impact on the Florida Keys: An estimated 25% of the houses on the chain of islands have been destroyed, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Tuesday. Another 65% suffered major damage. This article in the Miami Herald features several video clips with interviews of folks who did not evacuate. Some suffered minor damage as the eye of the storm passed over on Cudjoe Key. Others had significant damage or total loss. There is the possibility that those who remained behind may be evacuated by the Department of Defense. ~z Quote: The Department of Defense announced Monday that all 10,000 people who chose to stay in the Keys might have to be evacuated until basic services come back. ... The Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is sailing near Key West, ready to provide emergency services, according to the U.S. Northern Command, which oversees military relief operations. Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopters were flying rescue missions into hard-to-reach parts of Monroe County. An Army C130 plane had landed in Marathon, carrying satellite dishes to improve communication with first responders.

Here is a map centered on Key West and showing NOAA aerial photos taken *yesterday* (9-11-2017). The map also displays the U.S. National Grid which both FEMA and the State of Florida use for disaster response.

Today NOAA took aerial photos of the rest of the Florida Keys including Cudjoe Key and Big Pine Key. The NOAA ground team processed those photos and put them online *today*. This is amazing technology that lets us see georeferenced aerial photos on the *same day* the photos are taken. The map I posted above now includes a “Map Tips” link in the upper left corner of the map. If you click that link and then click “Irma aerial photo index” you will see a list of the areas covered by the aerial photos. For the next few days NOAA will likely be taking more aerial photos and this same map link will display them. You will need to click the “Map Tips” link to see what new areas have been covered.

Thanks for that, Joey. Interesting that at first glance (from "afar"), things don't look so bad, if at all. However, upon closer look it's very apparent that some serious work is still ahead. Specifically look at the harbors (boats all askew), and at the airport (something, storage bins, hangars?) strewn all over the ramp.

Okay they are starting to let folks return to their homes in the Keys. Here's a video published yesterday from a drive down US1 and through the lower Keys. Whoa. The devastation is much worse than I had thought. The sound cuts out about halfway through the clip. Note: The guy who published this video says: "I want to be clear about something first and foremost. Please notice the many standing building in decent shape in this video. The Florida Keys are amazingly resilient and we will get thru this just fine. The bounce back is always stronger than the set back. There will be a lot of love poured into this little chain of islands over the foreseeable future. If you want to help, then plan a trip here to the Keys in the next year. Spend some cash, have some drinks, enjoy the water, and be kind to the locals. More news to come. Stay tuned."
