There are still some pretty good western larches in the area around Iron Bear/ Teanaway Ridge and County Line Trails. Surprised to see so much color this late. No snow except at the tippy top of Miller Peak and it was shorts and tee shirt weather today.
Headed to Jester.

I hear talk of color change at Maple Pass. Peak there should be in about a week I would assume.

I hit Blue Lake and Maple/Heather Passes Thursday and Friday to enjoy cool clean air and see the fresh dusting of snow. Those trees in that picture above at Blue Lake are at the most advanced end of the range - most larch up there were at most a lighter shade of green than their summer garb. Mostly the same deal at Heather/Maple. I talked to someone who had been up to climb Black Peak early in the week and he said that the trees up at Wing Lake were already pretty yellow, and he was surprised that the lower trees around Heather/Maple hadn't advanced more as of yesterday. The blueberry/bilberry was the color star as of yesterday up thataway.

Here's my "truth in advertisting" photo showing the state of most of the larch up by Blue Lake as of Thursday evening. As an aside, it was nice to have the area to myself - all the lingering hikers and climbers were on their way out as I headed up.

I was up in the Leroy Basin area yesterday. Only 2-5% of the larches were showing any color.

Easy Pass yesterday: some yellow but most of them were still varying shades of lime green. I'd give it another 10-15 days to peak.

It ain't larch so pardon if this seems out of place, but fwiw the vine maples are flaming in broad swaths across the Alpental Valley and other points nearby right now. Quite a satisfying mix of reds, yellows, and oranges. A small sample... (as I didn't find any particularly photogenic views of the larger swaths, beautiful though they were in person)

Larches mostly yellow-green this Monday-Wednesday in the Entiats at Fern Lake and the valley over the ridge to the west beneath Choral and Gopher. Probably will reach peak color around Sunday.

I'm really discouraged by the weather report for this weekend as it relates to larch viewing. Also just feeling frustrated in general that my kids' schedules are getting tougher to schedule around. It feels like we don't have any full days any more for hiking, now that my son is in HS. We used to have Fridays off every week to catch up on school work, and hike if we wanted. But now we're living more of a normal life, and it seems like Saturdays and Sundays are just too busy. bawl.gif So when we have one day to go, and that forecast calls for snow, it's disheartening. We may go anyway. tongue.gif I know many of you can relate. Thanks for listening to me whine. crybaby.gif

The Sawtooths weather doesn't look bad. I guess it's all sort of unpredictable too. https://weather.com/weather/tenday/l/Lake+ChelanSawtooth+Wilderness+WAWILDLKCH:13:US
