We did a pre-Labor Day trip up to Lost Creek Ridge.

It rained all night Wednesday night (Yay!) and there were still lots of clouds around Thursday morning.

We waited hopefully for the clouds to lift, and ventured up towards Lake Byrne for a dayhike. We left too late to make it all the way up there, but enjoyed great views as the day progressed and the clouds gradually dissipated. We turned around at Hardtack Lake, which was lovely.

Friday morning dawned clear and sunny, perfect for our hike out. We met quite a few people coming in for the holiday weekend, up until then we had the whole place to ourselves.

With the smoke clearing out after our much needed rain and my semi-recovery from an acute Asthma flare up/Lung infection (thanks to the smoke) I decided to take my 7 year old and a few friends up to Blue Lake (Mt Baker area) for a quick easy hike and some fishing.
Though most of the county between Bellingham and Concrete was mostly sunny on Sunday, there was a big pocket of clouds hanging out over the lake. I was hoping for clear skies so my friends that had never been there before could get some better views, but the cool air and moisture was very refreshing.
Didn't catch any fish but we got a few good bites and we got to see them (Eastern Brook Trout) swimming around which my son really liked (he was really excited about how clear the water was -this was only he second trip to a high lake)
There were nice patches of perfectly ripe blueberries along the trail we that we all sampled. My son probably would have ate them all if I had let him - I told him to save some for the bears LOL
The rain brought out some mushrooms also. Unfortunately somebody had kicked most of them over but we did find some very bright orange fungus growing off of some logs. Orange peel maybe?
Thanks to a few people on the boards here I believe the plant in the picture with the berries in Rosy Twisted Stalk

Hopefully that second photo isn't supposed to be the blueberries

Beautiful places you visited. Great report. I appreciate that you held back on that last bit of summit. I like this perspective. ~z

Did Glacier Peak again via the Cool/Gerdine glaciers on 9/13-9/15. The difference the last month has made in the condition of the route is incredible. Lots of crevasse dodging/crossing on the Gerdine. Getting onto the Cool was somewhat sketchy, we eventually found an exposed ice-rib to cross but it took a while to find something that would go. The Cool is very broken up, we had to cross a few massive cracks and weave around quite a few more. Never heard of this route being in as rough of shape as it is currently. We need snow!

Gothic Basin today (9/24). There might've been some fresh snow a few days ago, but it's gone now. Same w/ Del Campo and Gothic Peak. Sloan and Pugh had a bit of fresh showing, surprisingly Cadet looked the snowiest of any of the local peaks. I only briefly saw a shoulder of Glacier Peak, it appeared to be wearing a lovely new coat of white. Plenty of people spread all around the basin, but didn't feel completely overcrowded. All of the backpackers from Saturday night were heading down while I was heading up. Beautiful day today. Couldn't ask for much more.
Just as I was leaving Foggy Lake on the way down a sheriff's helicopter buzzed over VERY low. Was heading towards Del Campo, then veered off to the right and disappeared from my view. Don't know what was going on up there, but probably a hiker or climber injured.

Went up to the Morningstar Natural Resource Conservation Area to see if we could find the abandoned overlook trail above Big Greider Lake. We did indeed find it, but after crawling on our bellies under vine maple for a little ways, retreated to the lakes where the fall colors were prime!
9/24/17 9/24/17 9/24/17 9/24/17 9/24/17 9/24/17
We saw no one until the end of the day, when we encountered a parade of three girls and three dogs part way up the trail. One of the girls had a normal backpack, one had a pack with a blanket hanging out of the top, and the third had a little daypack on and was carrying a Coleman tent in her hands. It rained that night, but at least each of them had a dog to keep her warm.
